Introduction Social networking has made its way into American culture quickly and is more prevalent now than ever before. Many people have different views on the relevance and benefits of social networking, whether they are positive or negative standpoints. Nevertheless, social media and networking is a part of our American lifestyles as a whole. As a Computer Information Systems major and studying the foundations and composition of computer applications, I would like to research the effects that social networks have on underclassmen undergraduate students attending an Historically Black College or University. In order to conduct this research, a study and survey must be held to determine whether social networking positively or negatively affects grade point averages by recording the number of social networks students are actively using and the number of hours spent on these applications in comparison to grade point averages. This research is important because there are many individuals who do not know the effects of their social networking, or lack thereof, has on their grades, sleeping patterns, health, and lifestyles in general. Although this research will focus on grade point averages of students, it will also determine if social networking has effects on other aspects of the college life such as sleeping patterns, health, and awareness. Purpose of Study Individuals should understand that the use or nonuse of social media has negative and positive effects on their lives whether they recognize them or not. This shows that the impact social media had on students’ academic career is negative. With a low grade point average students feel no need to push themselves which leads to low self-motivation. During the past two decades or so, there has been very explosive development of the Internet in our everyday lives. The growing use of the Internet has let to a variety social media sites. Facebook has become an essential part of almost everyone’s life, but especially college students. According to the article “Social Networking: Boundaries and Limits” only 10-20%of facebook users are not college aged students (AlDoubi, Anderson, Aragon, & Isaacs, 2014, p. 26). As the use of Facebook has continued to grow by both the number of users and the amount of time each user spends on it, we should be asking one question: Does the use of Facebook help or hurt college students in terms of social and educational opportunities? From a social standpoint, Facebook seems to have a lot to offer. As stated in the article “The Impact of Social Media on Children, Adolescents, and Families” Facebook gives people the chance to donate their time and efforts in the community by notifying them of upcoming events” (Clarke-Pearson & O’Keeffe, 2011, p. 2). Within the article “Me and My 400 Friends: The Anatomy of College Students’ Facebook Networks, Their Communication Patterns, and Well-Being” it states that an experiment preformed at the University of California proved that the more often college students were on Facebook, the more they felt supported from loved ones back home. Also, this made them feel as if they were a greater part of their college campus (Manago, Taylor & Greenfield, 2012, p. 370). In today’s society, very few recognize that social media is an addiction because as stated earlier, roughly fifty percent of users are logging onto Facebook daily to begin with. Therefore, nobody is looking to make any changes in Facebook’s usage policies or changes in how college students have made social media an addiction. Social behavior expert Megan Sponcil from Youngstown State University in Ohio states that “about 57% of social network users are 18-29 years old and have a personal profile on multiple social media websites” (4). The statistic that Sponcil points out shows that 19-28 year olds are the ones that are mostly affected by social media addiction. Poor performance in the classroom and a serious addiction will continue if this addiction is not broken.
First of all, “36 percent of people surveyed listed social networking as the “biggest waste of time”, above fantasy sports (25 percent), watching TV (23 percent), and shopping (9 percent)” (ProCon). Above all, studies show that after one checks is or her social media, it takes at least two hours to return back to full attention on his or her task. Social media entices people with one notification, then results in checking and talking to other people leading the person enticed into procrastination. This waste of time leads people, mainly kids, to procrastinate in school and leads them to having poor grades in their classes. “Students who use social media have an average GPA of 3.06, while nonsocial media users have an average GPA of 3.81, and students who used social media while they were studying scored 20 percent lower on their tests” (ProCon). Parents and teachers argue that social media is the cause of our generations downfall. Students had a higher GPA in elementary and middle school than in high school and college because social media were brought into their lives. Social networking sites have a positive effect on our society. Statistics show that, "59% of students with access to the Internet report that they use social networking sites to discuss educational topics and 50% use the sites to talk about school assignments." Along with that, "20% of students school-wide voluntarily completed extra-credit assignments." See, this right here goes to show that, social networking site have a positive impact in our society. Students are using the website for their schoolwork and it is improving their grades too. Many kids participated in taking extra credit assignments voluntarily. Over half of the students also said that they use sites to discuss educational topics and talk about their schoolwork with other kids. This is a great interaction. A Social Network in its simplest definition is “an online community of people with a common interest who use a website or other technologies to communicate with each other and share information, resources, etc.: a business-oriented social network.”(APA) When social networking started to gain popularity in the early twentieth century, criticism regarding its negative impact on society began to emerge. Recently, however, social networking has had a positive impact in schools to educate and get children more involved. It has also created an enhanced place for learning, as students are more capable of comprehension when also having fun. The positive impact social networking has on the education and development of students will play a crucial role in future learning as well as the way students communicate.
Teenagers who use social media a lot tend to have bad time management skills; they spend too much time on social media and forget the tasks on hand. “When alerted to a new social networking site activity… users take, on average twenty to twenty-five minutes to return to the original task.” (ProCon.org). Many users of social networks will get easily distracted when they receive a new notification on social media. A ton of adolescents have ADHD also known as attention-deficit/ hyperactive disorder, which means that they have a lower attention span already. When the amounts of children and teenagers have this disorder it makes social media a higher risk. Adolescents today are so addicted to social media they spend a ton of time on the sites. “40 percent of eight to eighteen year olds spend 54 minutes a day on social media sites” (ProCon.org). So basically, on average teenagers spend at least an hour on social media daily. In “Effects of Social Media on College Students”, research explains how social media effects the day to day lives of college students. In the study, participants were given an anonymous questionnaire on the effects of social media and their college life. Many of the questions and answers alluded to negative aspects. Mainly in terms of academics, its tendencies to increase considerable distractions. Also, leaving reality to live to be absorbed in a virtual zone for hours of the day. A large analysis within the study was if college students check social media during class and when doing schoolwork. Results show “Ninety percent of students spent their time on entertainment; there were not too many college students who preferred using social media to deal with their homework. Eighty percent of the sample admitted that they posted or responded while completing homework” (Chen, Liang, Wang, 2011). Essentially, most college students prefer to use social media and in turn spend expansive hours checking these sites. Facebook tended to be the most popular used in and out of class. Social Media has evolved magnificently since the first email sent in 1971. Social media is any form of website or application which enables us to share content with one another with a simple sharing tool. Social media has became an addiction for most, if you were to ask the average student if they were connected to a social networking site about 73 percent would reply with a yes. In addition about 63 percent of people log on to a social media site daily and on average 40 percent log on multiple times a day. Everyone has their own reasons for the use of social media which could include shopping, research, or other personal reason like venting and status updates. Students often connect to social media because majority of students have one so they feel included. Social Media has became an addiction to many of the students who happen to have a profile to a site. They feel the need to always be connected to society. Many of these students grades have either suffered or raised due to having better connections with other students. My essay will attempt to prove that social media has been affecting the children’s education and prevents them from reaching the academic growth they need.
Online social networks have grown steadily in influence, especially in the United States, as they become an integral part of the college undergraduates’ culture. One primary social network is the website Facebook, which caters to the culture of undergraduate students, with its free user profiles containing the ability to post pictures, form groups, and create events. The capability of Facebook and other social networks to influence students is evident, but whether the overall effect is positive or negative is questionable. Dr. David M. Eberhardt, who received his doctorate in Education from Florida State University, addresses the issue of online social networks in his article “Facing up to Facebook” found in the publication “About Campus,” a bimonthly magazine focused on particular techniques and influences that college students experience during their education. He argues both the benefits and the negative effects of online social networks, especially those concerning incoming undergraduates while also providing advice to administrators on how to implement social networks in ways that improve students’ education. In the article, Eberhardt’s argument focuses on three inter-related areas of online social networking: the transition to college, the development of student identity and involvement in the campus community, and undergraduates’ learning abilities. However, I think that online social networks are most beneficial in helping undergraduates transition to collegiate life, but they can also lead to the development of more harmful trends in concerns to students’ identities and learning environments.

Social Media has become a very essential tool in the society; in addition, it has a huge impact on communication and learning process. Social media is defined as websites and applications used for social networking. “As of September 2013, seventy-one percent of online adult use Facebook, eighteen percent use Twitter and seventeen percent use Instagram, twenty-two percent use PInterest, and another twenty-two percent use LinkedIn. In addition, "Between February 2005 and August 2006, the use of social networking sites among young adult internet user ages eighteen and twenty-nine jumped from nine percent to forty-nine percent. This literature review will examine and synthesize the published current research concerning the impact of Facebook on college students’ academic performance. Even though most studies are inconclusive in determining the relationship between Facebook and academic performance, all researchers contribute to understanding the way that Facebook might affect students’ academic achievement. While some studies speculate that Facebook does not impact academic outcomes, most studies show that there is a significant relationship between Facebook usage and college students’ academic performance, which is indicated by GPAs and students’ engagements.
