“What is interesting is the power and the impact of social media... So we must try to use social media in a good way.”(Yousafzai) Many believe that the negative use of social media is one of the major problems not only in America but in the world. When social media is overused or not properly used, problems can occur for a person no matter the age or socioeconomic class. One of today’s major issues is teenagers and their use of social media. In today’s time, one would believe that every teenager is always connected and constantly checking his phone for updates on social media. About 90 percent have used social media and around 75 percent have a social networking site(Teens’ use of social media: Positive or Negative? 1). This constant connection can be very harmful to a person’s mental and social health. According to Aurelie Krakowsky, social media can draw teens away from real world relationships and cause them to focus on trying to keep up with the rest of the world(1). “Facebook seems to have had a love-hate relationship with its users...American Academy of Pediatrics report addressing a new phenomenon described as "Facebook Depression"(1). Many of the pediatricians argue that social media can create a “skewed reality that makes teens feel alienated”(1). Studies have shown that around 20 percent of teens experience depression before they reach adulthood and Dr. Sara Riveroconil, who has dealt with many teens suffering from depression, claims that the sight of other teens having fun can cause an already depressed teen even more issues.
