The screen illuminates the room with an eerie glow. Swipe left, swipe right, double tap to like, swipe up, comment. With technology at our fingertips, social media has become an inevitable part of our daily lives. Private lives have become personal with Facebook rants, 140 character tweets, 6 second skits on Vine, and filtered photos on Instagram. Generations Y and Z have become accustomed to the constant status updates and notification checking. Social media is a prominent part of today’s teenagers everyday lives. A study posted recently states that teens nowadays spend over six and a half hours staring at a screen every day (“US Teens”). This makes one wonder, is this immersion into other people’s lives and the broadcasting of one owns life 24/7 detrimental to our society and our teenager’s development. In this day and age, communicating from one person to another no longer requires the use of vocal chords. Through Facebook messenger and direct messages on other social networking platforms, there are abundant ways to connect with others. Although quite handy at times, is this lack of “real world” interactions hurting our society? Psychiatrist Hayley Van Zwanenberg says that this reduction in social interactions brought on by the excessive use of social networking affects “children 's social skills and abilities to make small talk and listen and develop empathy.” Moreover, how will this stunt in basic communication skills affect young people once they have completed their education?
