Over the past decade, there has been a considerable debate about the effect of social media on individuals and societies. In fact, social media has become inseparable part of our life. It is not a new thing and has various forms. It emerged in the late seventies and the early eighties with the emergence of USENET, Bulletin Board System, AOL. In around 1994, private internet service providers came with new technology revolution in the major cities of the USA. This gave a golden chance to the millions of people to come online and gave them the access to the internet. This era was the dawn of the social media. This gave birth to various online social sites like classmate.com, P2P, Napster, Sixdegree, Friendster, Myspace, LinkendIn, etc. There were hundreds of social media sites available. However, ‘FACEBOOK’ in 2004, proved as a jackpot for the millions of social media users. Mark Zuckerberg founded the Facebook who initially started his project from the Harvard university blogging site. Facebook was launched in 2004 as a Harvard-only exercise and remained a campus-oriented site for two full years and finally opening to the general public in 2006(The Social network). Now, it is a very popular free social networking website that allows its registered users to create profiles, upload photos and video, send messages and keep in touch with friends, family and colleagues. It facilitates the real time information sharing.
According to various research studies in the field of online social networks, it has been revealed that social media is impacting the lives of the youth greatly. Some companies tend to outsource their social media asset management to their advertising partners. By acting social networks as stepping stones, social media marketing can gain a lot of benefits including relationship building, brand building, publicity, promotions and so on. So, it can be concluded that social media marketing proposes several opportunities for entrepreneurs, small businesses, midsize companies and huge corporates to build their brands and business (Gunelius,2011).
Another important contribution of the social media is that it reveals out various scams and frauds. People are making live videos of any fraud or scam happening near by without any fear. It also helps in mass invitation for any event.
