Why is it that children tend to be entertained by social media? All around us today we see that children are living their lives behind bright screens. This is very tragic to see within our generation, because children should be living and enjoying their lives.
In this case, media has been a priority for most children, because they have their attention to the screens instead of engaging with others. The type of media that has negative effects on children are television, video games, music videos, and the internet. Excessive television results in deleterious effects in the child’s learning and academic performance. Children watching explicit music videos can result in adverse behavioral effects. A study that was shown that in Canada, children are likely to have chronic disease, because they don’t practice any physical activity due to media. The burden of chronic disease is the fact that the low levels of physical activity will result in the child’s life style as an adult. In some cases, being on media can cause children to become Anti-Social. Children will rely on media for almost everything, because they didn’t develop the correct social skills which will result in media doing anything and everything for them. Setting limits to children and the time spent on media is necessary, so children can acknowledge the appropriate use. Encouraging play time for children is crucial part of playing when parenting. It is necessary to have children play outside more to release their energy in a positive manner. Face to face communication is important for children to practice as they continue to age, so that they can know how to have an appropriate conversation with others. Media can be useful when getting children to calm down, but that shouldn’t be the appropriate situation to solve the problem.     Recently my 13 year old brother received his second phone, an IPhone 4s. I could not believe it a 13 year old carrying around one of the best pieces of technology in our world. Since then my brother’s free time outside running around has decreased drastically. His eyes and hands are glued to his IPhone 4s. Finding him playing basketball or throwing a football around in my yard when I go home on the weekends has become less and less. This is just one of thousands of children whose physical activity has suffered due to technology. Today our society has created the perception to children that without the latest technology they are not ‘cool’ or even worse poor. Kids then beg their parents for updated technology in order to fit in. Face it even adults these days need the latest technology to stay updated with their work. The routine of most children that come home from school is eat, watch tv, see some more commercials on food and video games and continue the awful habit they’ve created. The urge to play outside or get involved in a team is less appealing then beating their record at Call of Duty while getting a sugar high. Our world is creating an environment where playing Candy Crush is more popular than playing a sport. Thirty-two percent of children ages 2-19 are overweight and seventeen percent is considered to be obese (Hingle, Dale).
