Although it remains a large portion of the U.S’ economy, tobacco smoking can lead to a variety of diseases and disorders that affect the user. The effects of smoking tobacco not only affect the user but surrounding people as well: permanently destroying their lungs and children, increasing the chances of diseases and of cancer.
Diseases caused by the effects of smoking or second hand smoke may lead to emphysema. To start, even after only a few years of smoking, one’s lungs could be affected for the rest of his/her life. Making reference to the issue, “If exposure to cigarette advertising is a risk factor for disease, it is incumbent on the public and elected officials to deal with it as we would the vector of any other pathogen” (Sullum). This said, it is a known fact that smoke contains many harmful chemicals found in rat poison and other toxic products. Shortness of breath and exasperation are a given and will occur, but so do diseases like emphysema which can gradually choke the user to death. Based on the following research, “The EPA’s Study is the most recent of these meta- analyses. It found an increased risk of 19% among U.S. nonsmokers married to smokers suffer from emphysema” (Sullivan). Emphysema remains a potent disease that slowly suffocates its victims; while recent studies show that although one may not smoke, second hand smoke could potentially trigger this disease in loved ones around the smoker. Finally, with recent modern technologies the disease could be removed but avoiding smoking altogether is an instant fix. According to this recent article, “Regardless of birth weight, babies born to smoking mothers are more likely to die in infancy than unexposed infants” (Sullivan). Obviously, the under-developed lung of...

All in all, the smoke affects the health of the smoker and those around them indefinitely. Smokers do not get old; they die young.

Did you know that in 2011 there were more than 6 million tobacco caused deaths worldwide (Henningfield)? Smoking is the act of inhaling and exhaling the fumes of burning plant material. Because there is nicotine in cigarettes, they are highly addictive. Cigarettes are one of the worlds most devastating causes of death and disease (Henningfield). There are many negative effects from secondhand smoking, both immediately and over time. Smoking also affects the environment indoors negatively. Also, when pregnant woman or parents of young children smoke, they could harm their children. People should not smoke with others around because they are exposed to harmful chemicals and they are not the one putting themselves in danger.
Walking the streets of Baltimore, the smell of cigarettes was everywhere. I sat at the bus stop and this homeless guy was asking for change while smoking a cigarette. I looked at him and didn’t feel any remorse because he was smoking. I imagined giving him money I had then he will spend it on cigarettes and that will be a waste of my money. I got up and moves about ten feet away from the second hand smoke but then saw a guy selling cigarettes. He has a pack of cigarettes and he is selling two cigarettes for a dollar. After about 10 munities waiting for the bus, I saw the homeless guy going to the guy who was selling cigarettes and bought two cigarettes. I looked at the homeless guy’s face and he was so happy. I
Smoking causes many other types of cancer, including cancers of the throat, mouth, nasal cavity, esophagus, stomach, pancreas, kidney, bladder, and cervix, and even leukemia has been found linked to smoking. Also, people who smoke are up to six times more likely to suffer a heart attack than nonsmokers, and the risk increases with the number of cigarettes smoked. Smoking also causes most cases of chronic obstructive lung disease. Also, approximately 49,400 deaths have been due to exposure to secondhand smoke. 3,000 nonsmoking adults die of diseases caused by exposure to second-hand smoke every year.
Every year, there are over 400,000 smoking-related deaths in the United States. A large percentage of these are due to lung cancer, whose leading cause is smoking. However, not all deaths are smokers themselves. Anyone in the vicinity can fall victim to second hand smoke. These people, through no action of their own, can have their lives threatened.

The sale of cigarettes and tobacco is a multi-billion dollar industry, but is it truly worth all the problems that stem from their use? Health care costs are extremely high due to all the health problems associated with cigarettes and tobacco. Even though research has proven time and time again the harmful effects of cigarettes, and the rising cost of health care caused by cigarettes, our government will not take a stand and stop all manufacturing of the horrible toxins. Every year, new medical reports are issued regarding the harmful effects of smoking cigarettes. Hundreds of thousands of people around the world die every year from diseases caused by smoking.

Did you know that in the US the effects of smoking cause more deaths than HIV, illegal drugs, alcohol, motor vehicle injuries, suicides, and murders combined? Have you had someone in your family who has suffered or died from the effects of smoking. I know I have, and the previous fact makes those deaths all the more tragic when you realize how preventable the deadly illnesses that result from smoking really are. Avoiding smoking entirely, can literally be the difference between life and death. The detrimental effects of smoking to your health, the carcinogenic materials in cigarettes and that comprise the smoke byproduct, and the surprising negative impact on one’s appearance are compelling reasons to never engage in smoking.
One person dies every six seconds due to a tobacco related disease, which results in a shocking amount of ten deaths per minute. Tobacco is one of the most heavily used addictive products in the United States. Tobacco contains over 4,000 chemicals; approximately 250 are dangerously harmful to humans. Smoking is a major public health problem. All smokers face an increased risk of lung cancer, cardiovascular problems and many other disorders. Smoking should be banned due to its many health risks, its second hand related smoke illness, and its excessive cost.

Scientists and health officials have been arguing the detrimental effects smoking has on our health for many years. Smoking can lead to serious complications including asthma, pancreas, lung and stomach cancer due to the large number of carcinogens (cancer causing chemicals) and other various substances added to it. It is a health hazard for both smokers and non-smokers and it is especially harmful to unborn babies. Although smokers claim that it helps them to relax and release stress, the negative aspects of the habit take over the positive. As it has been stressed by the scientists and experts, there are some very severe reasons of smoking but its crucial consequences should also be taken into consideration.
