The college life is not exactly what is imagined by the average young adult. Commercials and movies tend to portray college as if it’s a tropical getaway as well as persuading viewers that the college life is a no-brainer. College is full of excitement and opportunities, they say, which is true, but fail to inform that the college life comes with many responsibilities as well as sleepless nights. Sleep deprivation is a condition that occurs if lacking the correct amount of sleep. Sleep deprivation is a serious problem due to the long term as well as short term effects the condition can have on the body, such as causing the brain to function improperly, lowering academic performance, and if continued long enough it can decrease your body’s defenses resulting in possibly developing a chronic illness. This condition is a dilemma for many Americans, but it mainly affects the college students due to their improper use of time management along with staying up past their bedtime trying to complete an assignment due the following morning causing students not to obtain the correct amount of sleep every night. According to the Department of Neurology at the University of Michigan, the consequences of sleep deprivation within college students can affect grade point averages as well as increase risk of academic failure.
There are many possible contributing factors to sleep deprivation within the college setting such as students staying up late trying to complete multiple assignments as well as students juggling employment into their schedules to help pay for their tuition. Conclusively, sleep deprivation is a serious complication amongst college students. Not getting enough sleep can cause prospective obstacles short term as well as long term. College students feel that they will catch up on sleep during the weekend but what many fail to realize is that generally not getting enough sleep is unhealthy for the body. For example, lack of sleep is a component connected with obesity as well as many other complications the body can undergo. Therefore, in order for college students to get the correct amount of sleep every night, everyone needs to get involved such as professors and counselors in order to assure students to manage their time appropriately as well as the professors working together in order to have exams as well as projects due on different days. Sleep but don’t get too much sleep.
