Zosuls, Ruble and Tamis-LeMonda conducted an experiment to understand self-socialization in immigrant toddlers by evaluating their methods and choice of play. The authors chose to watch toddlers who came from low-income families and belonged to three different minority groups, African American, Dominican Immigrant and Mexican Immigrant’s to the United States.
In this particular study, the children were watched at 24 months and again at 36 months. They were tested to see if they could understand the difference between the two genders, using picture books, and they were observed as they played with the different of toys they were given, which tested if there was any gender stereotype play.
The researchers allowed each child to choose from a doll, a truck, helicopter toy, toy phone, nest cups and a puppet while doing this test. With each ethnic group, it was consistent that boys were more interested in playing with the truck, and girls were more interested in playing with the doll. Out of the gender-neutral toys, males did take more interest in the helicopter and females took more interest in the toy phone. However, there was no significance in the other two toys. The researchers found that the boys preferred to play with motion, compared to the girls who took place in more nurturing activities with their toys. The researchers believe an increased knowledge about gender categories (female vs male) does increase gender-stereotype play.
At the end of the article, the authors talk about the connection between poverty and cognitive development. They mention that children living in poverty have a slower cognitive development level than those who are middle class, for example. The findings of this research were that the toddlers...

Out of the total number of people who participated, the majority of the Dominican and Mexican children spoke only Spanish or a little English, while all of the African American children could speak English. Not being the majority population or able to speak English in an English is a reason why someone would discriminate against you. If you don’t speak English, I believe it’s more obvious that you’re an immigrant and some people aren’t accepting of immigrants, especially of the Hispanic countries. The third category that these families had to fit under to qualify for the experiment is to be of low-income. I believe Low-income Hispanics and low-income African Americans are more likely to receive discriminatory remarks and have judgmental comments spat at them than say low-income white people, purely for racial reasons.
