Why Students Procrastinate in College
There’s plenty of time to get this done; it can wait another few days. Tomorrow for sure this task will be completed in full. Oh no, this assignment is due by tomorrow morning and it’s almost midnight! These are some of the things that college students who procrastinate will experience. Procrastination can be detrimental to students’ educational success. The consequences of procrastinating in college are sleepless nights, stress and turning in poor work. Putting off an assignment for too long may lead to students not turning in the assignment at all. Students who put everything off for another day, week or month will eventually become overwhelmed. Students aren’t always in college for the right reasons. Some college students don’t even have a desire to attend college. So, they attend for a number of other reasons. Some are there to impress their parents. Some are there to just do the bare minimum to obtain a degree. Some students are just there for the financial aid money. When this happens there becomes a lack of motivation because they are in college for the wrong reasons. On the other hand, some college students are not in their profession of choice. For example, if students come from a family with a long history of doctors, lawyers, teachers or any other profession, they may be forced or expected to follow in the footsteps of their family. This can cause students to be very unhappy and unmotivated about what they are being taught. If students are not in a profession of their choice, there may not be any interest in learning. They will do the bare minimum just to get a passing grade. Since the students are pleasing other people and not themselves a lack of motivation may show up in all of their work. There just isn’t any excitement or enthusiasm to learn. This may lead students to procrastinate in turning in their work
