When pondering on the fears associated with foods normally digested today, one may invoke up depictions of diet borne disease or famished families in a distant Third World nation. Although conditions such as these are unfortunate, individuals in industrialized countries frequently inquire where their meal originated from and what it entails, but seldom go beyond that thought. Many forget a crucial element that goes in the preparation of produce they just bought, and that is pesticides. Pesticides are chemical compounds typically sprayed on crops to help eliminate bugs by containing an unwanted taste or creating a disease within the bug. However insects have learned to adapt to the chemicals, only strengthening the pest’s resiliency. Pesticides cause an array of health scares such as neurological diseases, cancers, and birth defects. Simultaneously, pesticides have extreme detrimental effects on the environment such collecting in water systems, polluting the air, and striping crucial plant nutrients in the soil such nitrogen and phosphorous. The abundant use of pesticides today have caused harmful effects on the environment and humans resulting in life long and irreversible consequences. We essentially have to make our crops, our air, our water, and our dirt free from toxic chemicals through nonhazardous cultural ways of agriculture.
Though the making and use of pesticides may be legal, do not be fooled in thinking they are minutely safe or contain no harmful effects. The way pesticides are registered in our political process allow corporations to hold enormous amounts of power and influence, resulting in many flaws when registering these pesticides. However, knowledge of whether foods should be bought organically or typically is wise. It is through exploration and learning what profits an individual can obtain through purchasing and consuming organic produces that will finally begin healing the earth and human health. If additional people search the “buy fresh, buy local” drive as well, they will realize not only the lower costs of foods but the nutritional quality of the products as opposed to the conventional chemical infested produce. In visiting online sites, public libraries, and farmers marketplaces we as individuals can spur change in how we regulate not only our vigor but in how large of a carbon footprint we leave on earth.
