I have chosen to write about the effect of natural disasters on our global society. Natural disasters such as earthquakes, hurricanes, wildfires, tornados, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions and floods have killed thousands of people over the past years. Studies have shown that natural disasters are becoming more common due to climate change. Natural disasters are classified into two groups, climate related and geophysical disasters. Climate related disasters include floods, wildfires, hurricanes, and tsunamis. Geophysical disasters include earthquakes, volcanoes, rock falls, landslides, and avalanches
The rise in natural disasters began in 2000. As a result of the harsh treatment of Earth, there has been a steady upturn in climate related natural disasters. The rise in disasters is caused by urbanization, deforestation, environmental degradation, higher temperatures, and precipitations. There were three times as many natural disaster between 2000 and 2009 compared to 1980 and 1989. 80% of the increase were climate related disasters. We are all at fault for allowing this to happen. Humans are the only people to blame for global warming negatively affecting our planet. These deadly disasters occur all over the world, and frequently. If you live near the ocean, you are more likely to be affected by a hurricane or typhoon. Places like, New Orleans, the Philippines, New Jersey, New York, India, Haiti, and Indonesia. One example of a deadly hurricane that occurred recently was in the Philippines.
Typhoon Haiyan hit the country of the Philippines in November of 2013. The 200 mile per hour winds left 3,982 people deceased, injured 18,266 people, 1,602 went missing, and 4,000,000 were left homeless. This storm was one of the most deadly hurricanes to ever make landfall.
We are all impacted negatively by the spike in disasters. We cannot control when and where these events happen. Everybody on Earth is at risk and will one day be effected by a disaster. Also, the government is impacted negatively. The rise is disasters has caused government relief programs like FEMA, to suffer money loss. Because of storms occurring more often, FEMA’s spending’s have risen, causing the government to pay more.
We are all responsible to help put a stop to the rise in lethal climate related events. It doesn’t matter how old you are, or where you live, everybody can lend a helping hand to our Earth. A sense of community can help this issue be resolved. If you possess a sense of community, you care about the people around you and want to contribute.
There needs to be a reduction in emissions, yet we cannot focus on this aspect of global warming alone. There are many indicators that climatic change is influencing the frequency and intensity of natural catastrophes. If scientific global climate models are accurate, the present problems will be magnified in the near future. Already scientists have observed that more than 75% of the recent economic losses are caused by natural hazards, which can be attributed to wind storms, floods, droughts and other climate-related hazards. In the year 2008, the U.S. state of Iowa was on the front pages of newspapers all around the world.
There is an agreement in the literature that “when people share a strong sense of community they are empowered and motivated to change the problems they face and are better able to mediate the negative effects over things which they have no control” (Chavis & Wandersman, 1990).
This was the deadliest hurricane to ever hit the United States and caused between 8000 and 12000 deaths.
Hurricane Katrina did its destruction in late August of 2005. It began as a category 5 and then became a category 3 hurricane. Before hitting New Orleans, Katrina hit South Florida and then the Gulf Coast. Before Katrina struck land, a state of emergency was declared and mandatory evacuations were issued. Katrina was the most destructive and costliest natural disaster in the history of the United States and the deadliest since 1928. Over 1,400 people died and almost 2,000 people are still unaccounted for.
The increased temperature created by climate change will affect the surface temperature of the oceans, thus creating changes in the atmospheric water content. This change is what will increase the rate of water-based natural disasters (Friederike, 2015). Since Haiti is an island nation, it is extremely vulnerable to natural disasters like hurricanes and earthquakes.
in the Philippines, the extreme cold in eastern United States, the floods in Europe in June or the hot temperatures in Australia. Over the past couple of years, the climate change and many natural disasters occurred such as hurricanes and tsunamis that destroyed many countries. The icebergs are melting affecting its population and the rise of waters. How did all this happen? How come we are responsible for what we are forced to suffer through?
There has been an upward trend in storms causing financial losses, but there are also societal contributions to this trend, such as increases in population and wealth. Recently, scientists have also discovered that the number of tornadoes that occur in outbreaks is increasing by about 0.66 percent per year. Scientists are saying that, global warming could be cause of an increase in tornadoes and natural disasters. As an individual within a greater community, I know that I am just one piece to the whole. Each individual person within a community makes up one part of the entire thing. It is each individual’s actions that make that community what it is. In every community that I am in, I am an active member who cares about each member. I want the best for my community and will do whatever I can to make it a positive atmosphere for everyone. Community is such an important aspect in life, and everyone should be able to have the chance to experience
Natural disasters are natural events that cause damage or loss of life. These events effect millions of people all around the world each year. The effects that these disasters have on children can be very serious, but often vary based on the severity of the disaster. There are no ways to control these events, making them hard to predict and prepare for. In 1999, there were nearly seventy million children that were impacted by natural disasters, and with climate change continually worsening, this number is likely to triple by the year 2020 (Penrose and Takaki, 2006). When it comes to looking at the impacts of these disasters, children and their personal well beings are rarely the focus because there is a misconception that children aren't effected
Climate changes and natural disasters can cause military crises, population migrations, scarcity of water, food, and space which could lead to failed states, instability, and potentially radicalization.
Of all the effects of global warming, the extreme weather that is taking place all over the world is the most obvious one. Global warming will bring more heat waves, drought, fiercer wildfires and stronger hurricanes. “This intensification of weather and climate extremes will be the most visible impact of global warming in our everyday lives” (75 yrs NWF). Due to rising temperatures, places everywhere will be affected as we get more extremely hot summer days and lesser winters. In addition, as these rising temperatures shifts the cycle of rain and increases evaporation, there will be longer and drier droughts which in turn can lower the water supply for life everywhere. Wildfires can turn out to be even more catastrophic due to warmer temperatures and drier areas combined with accumulated levels of fuel loads in the forest which has built up as a result of decades of fire suppression activities. Moreover, stronger hurricanes are also an effect of global warming as sea levels are rising and heavier rains are falling near the coasts. Overall, global warming is bringing climates that are changing real fast.
The English writer John Ruskin once said “Sunshine is delicious, rain is refreshing, wind braces us up, snow is exhilarating; there is really no such thing as bad weather, only different kinds of good weather,” (John Ruskin Quotes - Page 4) but I’m sure there are many who disagree with him. Nature’s beauty is a gift from God, but occasionally nature is not so aesthetically pleasing. Natural disasters occur often around the world destroying the lives of many on a regular basis. An example could be the recent flood victims of Australia or even last year’s earthquake in Haiti. There are several types of natural disasters¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬- from earthquakes to hurricanes and floods; they often strike without warning and leave a path of destruction and despair in their path.

Typhoon Yolanda, or internationally known as Typhoon Haiyan, struck the central part of the Philippines but greatly affected the eastern part of Visayas region on November 8, 2013. According to PAGASA it has a maximum sustained winds of not less than 250 kph, gusts up to 312 kph, and a 21 feet storm surge. According to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), it is said to be the strongest typhoon that has made a landfall to date, and probably the typhoon that has the most number of casualties as it leaves with more than 2500 fatalities, not including those who are missing. Moreover infrastructures such as town buildings and halls, public roads, schools, hospitals, and even farmlands are greatly devastated resulting into a more problematic and hostile environment for the victims.
