Let’s be honest, exercise is not something that most college students have time for, or feel like they need to do. Although, physical activity and a slight lifestyle change can not only boost your confidence, but also increase your mood, lengthen your life, increase your energy, and improve your immune system (Styles). One of the most important skills to maintain in college is a strong and healthy mental state. Mental health and physical health go hand in hand. But the not-so-simple change in college can be made through a shift in diet. This will take no extra time at all. Although it is crucial as a recently retired high school athlete to understand what eating healthy can do for the body, it is also important to know that once the activity level changes, so should the diet. Try taking less starchy foods such as bread and noodles, and add more fruits and vegetables. Unfortunately, young adults have heard this advice before, but it seems to be a tough adjustment to adapt. If the foods taken in are high enough in nutritional levels, then exercise can be less necessary. The temptations in college make eating healthy very difficult. With so many food options, a strategy much be recognized. The best way to eat the most nutritious and delicious foods is by making the rounds through the whole area. First start by finding a seat next to friends, and then start making many circles around the multiple tables in the room. Finding first what looks the best, then finding what will be the healthiest and give the most benefits. Making this small change in your diet can be most beneficial and cause the drastic changes that most people want to see. Healthy living is vital to a happy life and to a degree, chances are higher of being healthy. With information from CA Career Briefs (2014) we learn, “As a college grad, you are less likely to be obese. Plus, you will exercise more vigorously, more often.” This is accompanied by the graphic showing the chances of working out are 50% higher.
While college students try to live their daily lives, many might not have the time to do as much as they used to do back in high school. Freshman college students could easily gain the “freshman 15.” There are so many ways to try and avoid gaining the weight. The most important way to avoid the freshman 15 is to eat healthy. Avoid consuming too many sugared drinks. And be sure to get plenty of sleep every night. Following all these steps could lead someone in the right direction of losing weight and not gaining the extra fifteen pounds. Just eat healthy and make good lifestyle choices throughout college.

That’s what makes this generation of students distinct from its predecessors, he said. That is why more students who cannot cope with these feelings end up at college counseling centers with “increasingly serious mental-health problems.” 15 to 20 percent of college students nationally were diagnosed with depression. The second most common diagnosis was severe anxiety. According to the article, it is not unusual for mental-health issues to become apparent during a student’s college years.
Relevance: Weight problems are something a lot of people struggle with in college. I.E.; Freshman 15. And being healthy in college can really help people deal with other stuff better. Because when you don’t have to worry about your health you can focus on exams and homework more.

College students lead very busy and stressful lives which impacts all aspects of their health. One of the highest risks of a hectic routine is poor eating habits. Many students commonly reach for junk food during study sessions, or fast-food during a night out with friends. Also, many students have reduced impulse control and will choose to eat foods that are high in fat, salt, carbohydrates, and sugar. It is vital that students understand the importance of their choices as well as ways to make better decisions when it comes to meals and snacks.
As far as mental behaviors, organization is a key in managing stressors. In Misra and McKean’s study (2000), it was found that there was a strong correlation between stress, time management, and perceived academic stress. In addition to mental behaviors, physical behaviors hold equal importance, especially in the case of healthy habits. To reference back to Brougham’s (2009) study again, he stated, “students who reported higher levels of stress also consumed a greater amount of ‘junk food,’ were less likely to exercise, and less likely to obtain adequate amounts of sleep”. Supporting this evidence, Kandiah (2006) reports that in her study of college women, 81% reported a change in eating habits when they are stressed. Not only can stress effect eating habits, it can also effect sleeping habits, as found in Pilcher and Walter’s (2010) experiment where students were more confused and despite putting forth all of their effort, they were not performing as well as normally sleeping students. Bringing all of this evidence together, it is important that health habits like eating and sleeping change, because even though they may seem unrelated, they can create a cycle of bad performance and stress if not recognized and fixed soon enough. Going to college can be an exciting new experience that can challenge a person more than he or she thought was possible. Attending college, especially for the first time, can be a very stressful time in a person’s life. Some of the stress that is associated with attending college are living in a new place, having to meet new people, having new responsibilities, and of course the homework that goes along with taking classes. By increasing the importance of personal mental health, people can reduce issues associated with mental health problems and raise awareness for people who suffer from mental health issues.
