Continuous exposure to hostile video games in elementary school children for one year resulted in a rise in physical as well as verbal aggression(Anderson et al. 2007).
The next year Anderson et al. (2008) conducted the first longitudinal and cross-cultural research study in which students were exposed to violent video games at the start of the year and tested at the end of the year to examine differences in their behaviour. The results were in line with previous research and confirm that exposure to violent video games during early childhood results in heightened rates of physical aggression. As the samples were drawn both from the individualistic USA and from the collectivistic Japan researchers concluded that findings are generalizable among different cultures.
In another study, conducted with German secondary school students over a 30 month period, (Möller & Krahé 2009) concluded that exposure in violent video games during adolescence results in long-term physically aggressive behaviour. However, they did not find any links of violent video games with indirect aggression.

It is thus apparent that research findings haven’t achieved to reach a consensus about the nature of this relationship. Future research should focus on the process by which this influence is accomplished, considering the existing knowledge of human cognition and the underlying psychological mechanisms, so as to create a more holistic and concrete idea of this phenomenon. Also, the social context, such as family, peers and societal aggression are factors that future research should consider and more longitudinal studies should run to establish the existence long-term effects.
