According to research, various researchers in the past have shown and done many studies on the effect of low self-esteem and bullying on plastic surgery patients. People that go through plastic surgery must have a reason as to why they want plastic surgery (Gimlin 2002). Plastic surgery is something that is permanent and is something to think about before getting. Researchers have focused on women who had plastic surgery and if they were victims of low self esteem and bullying (Brito 2010; Kinnuen 2010; Veiga 2010; Collins 2012). This is due to the reason that women are the dominant population that gets plastic surgery. In recent research (Gimlin 2002), the researcher has identified and categorized plastic surgery patients’ reasons for their change of appearance. Gimlin (2002) categorize the reasons into four groups explain 1. Change to bring them to their inner self, 2. To please someone 3. Children being bullied 4. Bizarre reasons. All the four reasons connect with a form of low self-esteem or bullying. Teasing, a form of bullying creates low self-esteem in early age adolescents and ultimately leads to voluntary plastic surgery (Gimlin 2002). Kids feel a sense of hopelessness because their peers are teasing them every day. Plastic surgery is just one out of the many options that people with low self-esteem result to. Sometimes bullying does not necessarily need to happen because another person is making you feel powerless. Society norms created by the media acts as a type of bullying. This affects the viewer’s decisions of plastic surgery and falls in the category of bizarre reasons (Gimlin 2002).
While many previous researchers focused on bullying and self-esteem level, many researchers do a big amount of research on how plastic surgery affects bully and self esteem (Brito 2010; Krishan 2013; Veiga, Daniela F., Joel Veiga-Filho, Leda M. Ribeiro, and Lydia M. Ferreira). They focus more on the future, rather than the past.
