The schools have debated the use of homework, causing modifications to the system of homework. They have also looked back into times as early as the nineteenth century, to find old techniques that may help students in today’s world. Countless hours of research, has proven that the human mind cannot process amplitude amounts of information in so much time. Homework can lead to academic success, and it becomes crucial to a student’s life. Although, it causes students to become stressed and losing time to do other in school or out of school activities. New Jersey started a homework policy that limited the amount of homework teachers could give. They strongly discourage weekend homework, and forbade teachers from counting it as a grade (qtd. in Vatterott). Other schools in the United States saw what this New Jersey school did, but these other schools believed homework was important to be graded, to help the students that struggle with test. Schools having homework graded gives these kids a chance to keep their grades up. Also in today’s times, a lot of schools have the ten minute rule. An example of this rule, is a first grader should have no longer than ten minutes of homework, a second grader should have no longer than twenty minutes of it, and it continues on up. By the time you are a senior in high school, homework should not exceed by a hour and a half. A hour and a half seems like a long time, in all considering a teenagers busy schedule, but also, these young adults are still kids. Some will argue, older students can sit longer, therefor can take in additional amounts of homework, but it has also shown that these students may fail a test if they studied too long. The logic behind this came from tenth through twelfth graders. It appears that the achievement seems to improve when student do homework, although after doing one-and-a-half or more hours of it a night, achievement declines. The success in school tends to increase by having smaller amounts of homework. A person’s brain needs downtime to process information
