Gender and sex have long impacted different sectors of society and in many different ways. One of the most important and detrimental effects of an individual’s gender is how it can influence that person’s health. A person’s gender will impact how long the person may live, what kinds of diseases he or she will contract, and for how long or at which stage in his or her life the person will be affected by a disease. The effects of gender and sex on a person’s health stem from social, psychological, and biological factors. The social and psychological effects are intrinsically related to a person’s gender, while the biological effects are related to a person’s sex. Gender’s social construction and meaning has been changing throughout time and these changes are emphasized through the changes of health patterns between men and women. Gender is socially constructed; sociologists have noted that gender is something that is done or acted out, not something someone is. It affects how a person will choose to live their life, how they will act in society, and what kinds of actions they will take when faced with dilemmas, including health.
