The Role of Marlowe's Excessive Drinking
Throughout the book 'The Big Sleep'; the character Marlowe is a detective working in Criminal Justice. This job seems to bring about a lot of stress to Marlowe, and in order to cope; he turns to drinking which relaxes him. Although he is an alcoholic he still is able to function and get his investigations done. He is a functional alcoholic who abuses alcohol constantly and has a great desire for it for various reasons. Some of the reasons that may be directly linked to Marlowe's abuse of alcohol boredom, psychological and or physical dependence and sometimes he drinks casually and socially. But job- related stress is the main reason Marlowe turns to alcohol because there are times he is able to drink on the job, drinking helps him relax and cope with his job-related stress, and alcohol is the agent that helps him deal with those problems.
One of the reasons that may cause Marlowe to turn to alcohol is his job. His job as an investigator sometimes turns stressful and alcohol helps him relax and get his mind off the job. Dealing with people and criminals constantly through out the day on the job can be stressful. Besides the fact that he must deal with Carmen's craziness, as the author describes her to be. Marlowe at one moment states 'I went to bed full of whiskey and frustration.'; This shows us that he drinks to help deal with the frustration he goes through and whiskey helps him.
Often times Marlowe drinks while working. Usually when socializing with someone. In a conversation with Eddie Mars Marlowe says 'I made myself a drink and was drinking it when the phone rang.'; In another situation while talking to Carmen he mentioned that he is going to go mix himself a drink and offers her one as well. After saying yes, Carmen and Marlowe drink together. This is all taking place while Marlowe is on the job, again drinking to get his mind off of other things and relax. This shows that Marlowe is not just a social or casual drinker, he is an alcoholic and has some form of dependency to alcohol, not to mention a great tolerance as well. Marlowe recognizes this and drinks in front of people, with people while along, and he mentioned he doesn't care if anyone knows. When people are vulnerable Marlowe offers drinks and in most situations finds himself a drinking partner.
The Romans drank a lot of wine but not straight or quickly. “Diluting wine and drinking with restraint were ordinary courtesy. The purpose of a dinner party was relaxed enjoyment, not getting drunk.” (166) A Roman was supposed to manage this temptation. If Trimalchio and his guests didn’t consume so much alcohol then maybe the night would have gone a lot smoother.
Another way these characters avoid living their life is by drinking continuously, in a way to make the time pass by faster and forget. ?Haven?t you had enough? She loses count after 10 cocktails,? (pg.11) proving to the audience her own self denial, and how she wastes every day. Unfortunately, there are many, who in society today, do the same thing to get out of a situation they?re trying to hide or a difficult time they?re going through. This relates back to their affair which they?re obviously hiding and trying to get through this time in their life.
One of the symbols that the author uses in “Cathedral” is drinking which shows how humans use drinking as a form of escaping of their problems, but at the same time drinking helps the narrator to have a more open mind. In the story drinking is present many times, when the wife tried to kill herself, when the husband is waiting for her wife and the blind man, when the husband meets Robert, and when the husband, the wife and Robert eat and when they watch television. According to Caldwell Tracy “The narrator's disaffected state of being seems exacerbated by his turn to alcohol and drugs, which he uses both to provide a comfort level during Robert's visit and as a strategy to deal with his frequent nightmares.” Drinking in the story can be seen as a way of escaping reality because one knows that the husband is lonely an alcohol is a way of forgetting that. “I did the drinks, three big glasses of Scotch with a splash of water in each. Then we made ourselves comfortable and talked about Robert’s travels” (436), this quote shows how drinking in the story was the form in which the husband and Robert star socializing and ...
It is said that, after the death of Virginia, Poe turned to the use of alcohol more frequently and his behavior became more erratic. Drinking large amounts of alcohol increases the risk fa...
Among the world, rashness is a very widespread issue and is possessed by millions of hasty thinkers. In William Shakespeare's tragedy, Romeo and Juliet, Friar Laurence adapts inimical impulsiveness while helping the young lovers. Romeo and Juliet come to the Friar in seek of help in uniting their love, and Laurence impels very quickly to solve their problems. Although the Friar does actuate for the good, he does not think over his actions well enough for them to succeed. The supposedly dubious character, Friar Laurence, is ultimately to blame for the tragic death of Romeo and Juliet due to his consistent rashness throughout the book.
The lower class of London were regular drinkers, not social drinkers though, they just wanted to get drunk fast to escape the pain of the difficult lives. It was introduced to England after the arrival of William and Mary from the Netherlands in 1688.This gin business was a part of economic plan of the government, so that they could create the demand for surplus grain. The first engraving I have chosen to examine is called "Beer Street". On Beer Street everyone seems happy, healthy and hard-working. Seem to be refreshing themselves with a drink of beer while they are at leisure.
Multiple mass shootings such in Aurora, Colorado, Roseburg, Oregon and Newport, Connecticut has sparked massive gun control disagreement. The media has influenced two point of views regarding this topic. One side argues that increasing gun control decreases casualties of mass shootings, while the other side claims decreasing gun control increases self-defense. In a US News article by Susan Milligan, she argues that “although gun control does not stop criminal activity, it decreases accidental deaths and suicide”, thus saving lives. LA Times writer and social policy professor, James Wilson claims gun control does not solve gun violence and makes it harder for law-abiding citizens to defend themselves. Both authors use language to convince the
The character Marlowe Marlowe is known for his constant need of liquor, especially scotch. Throughout the story, there are different times and places that the author, Chandler, makes sure that the reader acknowledges that Marlowe has a bottle at all times when in need of a shot. Frequent alcohol users use alcohol for various
The main characters in both The Black Cat and The Raven consume alcohol to have their current thoughts blurred or forgotten for the time being. One night he was “...guilty; but it was, at best a feeble and equivocal feeling…again plunged into excess, and soon drowned in wine all memory of the deed!” (Poe 2). The wine might have gotten to his head leading him to hear and see “... a flirt and flutter, in there stepped a stately Raven...” (Poe 2). The Raven was never there he was imagining it. His state of sorrowfulness and intoxication brought the Raven into his thoughts because of the death of his love. he “...approached and saw, as if graven with an accuracy truly marvelous. There had been a rope about the animal's neck” (Poe #). His guilt lead him to believe that what he saw was true.
Alcohol had some effect on all the characters in Tender is the Night either directly or through a loved one. It was the cause of the ruin of two of the main characters. Drinking played a very important role in many of the events that took place.
Several times in the novel he indulged in his drinking to the point of becoming
In Dubliners, characters feel trapped in work related issues, which ultimatly results in unhappiness. In the story “Counterparts”, Farrington is unhappy with his job. Working as a copy clerk, does not provide Farrington with proper satisfaction. The mistreatment he receives from his boss, makes his job worse. Mr. Alleyne screams, “you have always some excuse or another for shirking work. Let me tell you that if that contract is not copied before this evening I’ll lay the matter before Mr. Crosbie... Do you hear me now?” (83). Farringtons boss is strict and demeaning. Feelings of worthlessness are quite evident. One might argue that Farrington abuses alcohol as a way to escape his work responsibilities. He does this by engaging in constant stops at the pub during his work day. “It’s alright Mr. Shelley, said the man, pointing with his finger to indicate the objective of his journey” (84).
There are many times where the narrator describes his actions towards his loved ones while under the influence of alcohol. Since the narrator is trying to draw the attention to his consumption of alcohol, he tries to make sure that his actions trace back to it. In the short story, the narrator says "But my disease grew upon me -- for what disease is like Alcohol !..."(Poe 23) which shows his addiction for alcohol becoming stronger. The narrator's madness seems to be heightened by the alcohol. He begins to chan...
Alcohol is a way for humans to escape their reality. Though that sounds fun and exciting, it can be very dangerous. Alcohol is a very common drug that is used by teenagers and adults. Alcohol can affect our brain, heart, pancreas, immune system, cancer risk, and much more (“Alcohol’s Effect on the Body”). Alcohol is contained by people to usually have a good time, but some people can abuse the use of alcohol and become addicted. At first, alcohol often makes people feel relaxed and happy. Later, it can cause drowsiness or confusion ("Alcohol Use and Older Adults”). Alcohol can also be used as an anti-depressant. The consuming of alcohol if not of age can cause people who are younger than 21 to
..., cancer, liver and pancreas disease etc. There are many factors why do people drink, such as: make friends, forget problems, to feel happy, to relax, to feel less anxious, to feel confident and the genes, in my opinion play the key role in this problem. Some people don’t realize that this is a big deal, the big problem until it’s late. Once someone tried alcohol and become dependent it is hard to realize that person needs help to stop it. Also drinking alcohol is closely linked with use of other drugs, legal and illegal. Smoking, drinking and drug taking often co-exist. I chose this article to review because I think it has good examples to show people what causes alcohol dependence and what conditions one can get if drinking alcohol often. People need to remember that we live ones and it is important to keep ourselves healthy and none of bad habits worth our life.
