Depression is an emotional state of having a low self-worth or guilt. It is also not having the ability to have a normal life and enjoy happiness. People have a sense of hopelessness, helplessness, and worthlessness. Although, it is not only a state of being sad, it is also a medical illness that can cause suffering for individuals and it can cause loneliness between the person and their friends and family. Depression should not be taken as a joke, people cannot simply “get over it”, it needs to be taken seriously and it needs prescribed medication. According to Anxiety and Depression Association of America, an international nonprofit organization dedicated to the prevention, treatment, and cure of depressive, anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive disorders, stated, “Depression Anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the U.S., affecting 40 million adults in the United States age 18 and older, or 18% of the population.”

Those diagnosed between the ages of 18 and 24, when there 's a 10.9 percent rate of depression, are at the greatest risk for self-harm.
