Many college students have experienced some kind of depression during their college life. However, most students do not have enough information to understand what depression means. According to Nation Institute of Mental Health (NIH) depression means “a common but serious mental illness typically marked by sad or anxious feelings” (Depression and College Student). Depression can cause mental damage to college student if the student is not treated correctly. In addition, there are many different types of depression, the common one contain major depressive disorder, Dysthymic disorder, and Minor depression. Each types of depression have different effects on college students, major depressive disorder can cause college student unable to perform daily tasks, such as eating, sleeping, and studying. Dysthymic disorder is student that has major depression for a long time usually two years or more. Minor depression is less dangerous compare to previous two disorders; however, because the symptoms only last for short term, it can cause people to ignore the disorder, which then later on develop into major depressive disorder. Psychotic depression is a rare disorder, however, this depression cause student to create hallucination and delusion, which then students become a psychosis. The common sign and symptoms for depression are sad, anxious, restless, loss of interest in activities, lack of energy, cannot concentrate, insomnia, and thoughts of suicide. The Biomed Center provided that “Studies have identified depression among college students as a risk factor for poor academic performance [2,3], problem drinking [4], suicidal thoughts [5,6], frequent illness [7], and college dropout [8]” (Wilson). Students have to worry about doing academically well in college for scholarship, students have to worry about being successful at their major, and students have to worry about what to do after graduation because many students are in college to get an degree but never thought about their future, therefore, upperclassman have higher depression level over underclassman. The university used Tukey test, which is a math calculation for the significant difference between two data and according to the test result there is a significant difference in the score for junior and freshman as well as senior and freshman, based on the result, the conclusion is that upperclassman score higher in stress, anxiety and depression level.
