We often come across news showcasing the effects of cyberbullying in high schools and the depression it causes in their student body. Cyberbullying is one of the leading causes of deaths since technology has increasingly gotten better every day. Chris Colfer said it best when he stated, “When people hurt you over and over, think of them like sand paper; they may scratch and hurt you a bit, but in the end, you end up polished and they end up useless.” People should not be afraid to stand up for themselves and not let anybody tell them they are not themselves or capable of doing something with their lives.

She was a young girl who was cyberbullied when she was in the seventh grade. Amanda Todd was bullied by her looks until one day she went on a website. She went on a video cam site such as Omegle and started to talk to random people. She met one guy that she thought was a good guy. He wanted her to various acts of sexual exposure because he thought she was a good-looking girl. One day he wanted her to put on a “show” for him or he would release her pictures online. Amanda Todd refused to put on that show for him and a day later the police told her that her pictures were on the Internet. When her picture went viral she lost all her friends, her reputation, and created a mass of bullying. The day before her death she created a video explaining her feelings on note cards and posted the video on YouTube. The video went viral the day of her death and that is when people realized how she was feeling. Bullies do not realize that one word can hurt a person forever and change the way they view themselves. Since technology is getting better it provides bullies to have more leeway because they cannot get caught as easy. Edwina Washington states, “Electronic media provide people a new environment to misuse technology and anonymously bully others, anywhere, and at all times (1).” Kids get away with cyberbullying because nobody wants to admit they are getting bullied. The bullies get away with it because people cannot witness getting cyberbullied. The victim of cyberbullying is then controlled by the bully and never leaves them.
