The purpose of this paper is to discuss the effects of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) on a students’ overall school experience along with strategies that can be implemented to improve their experience. Research has found that students with ADHD have decreased cognitive skills which can affect their academic performance. Students with ADHD often display inappropriate behavior with their peers and in the classroom setting. Such inappropriate behavior leads to social isolation from peer groups. Teachers may not completely understand or know how to deal with ADHD students and therefore have preconceived notions about the students. Through the implementation of classroom management, differential instruction, improved cognitive function, improved social function, and improved teacher-student relationships, students with ADHD may have a more positive overall school experience.
How Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Affects a Students School Experience
“Attention deficit hyperactive is characterized by pervasive and developmentally inappropriate difficulties with attention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity (American Psychiatric Association, 2000)” (DuPaul, Weyandt, and Janusis, 2011, p.35). Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder or ADHD affects many children from many different socioeconomic, cultural, and racial backgrounds who may be at any intellectual level. It is the responsibility of the education system to learn more about these students and their needs while taking the necessary steps to improve the students overall school experience.

Unfortunately, these students can become social outcasts that are isolated from their peers, which can lead to depression, social withdrawal, and negative social preferences. ADHD students are further scrutinized by teachers who have many misconceptions about these students and their disability. Through the implementation of school-based interventions, students with ADHD can increase cognitive function, improve academic performance, have strong teacher-students relationships, and socialize with their peers. In order for students with ADHD to be successful, all aspects of their school environment need to be functioning in a positive manner. It should be the goal of teachers and schools to achieve an overall positive learning environment within the school for all students.
