According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, the term “advertising” refers to the action of calling something to the attention of the public, especially by paid announcements (“Advertising”).In today’s society, people are constantly bombarded with advertisements every day, whether through television, social media, billboards, or magazines. Pope Paul IV was right for stating, “No one now can escape the influence of advertising” (Pontifical Council for Social Communication 1). Advertisers are extremely powerful in today’s society. In fact, several broadcasters rely on advertising revenue to survive. A 2014 study found that the average person is exposed to almost four hundred advertisements each day. This exposure continues to increase each day (“New Research Sheds Light on Daily Ad Exposures”). Exposure to advertisements and their importance in society today directly correspond. While there are two sides to the argument of advertising, the Catholic Church views the issue as neither intrinsically good, nor intrinsically evil (Pontifical Council for Social Communication 1). There are five important views of the Church that need to be taken into consideration when understanding the issue: Society’s right to information, the growth and development of the morality of the human person (1), the unreliability of advertisements, respect for the human person, and steps we can take when we encounter advertisements. Because advertisements are so influential on society today, it is up to advertisers to provide the public honest information that respects the dignity of the human person.

The final point includes a way in which we can end the exploitation in the advertising industry. With the increasing importance of advertising on today’s society, it is the responsibility of advertisers to provide the public with honest information that respects the dignity of the human person.
