According to Steven McShane and Mary Ann Von Gilnow (2015), “An effective team is one that benefits the organization, its members, and survives long enough to accomplish its mandate (McShane & Von Gilnow, 2015, p. 225).” In an essence to achieve a goal that has a productive output for the good of the organization and at the same time the team members are satisfied, surviving the completed task, and are ready to take another project if needed. To evaluate a team’s effectiveness, a team effectiveness model can be used. This model helps with evaluating all conditions outside the environment that influences its effectiveness according to Steven McShane and Mary Ann Von Gilnow (2015). The team effectiveness model evaluates the organizational and team environment, by using team based rewards, communication, organizational structure, organizational leadership and physical space. Team design, by means of task characteristics, team size and team composition to produce a team process. In the team processes the team development, norms, cohesion, and trust are formed. This produces the final result of team effectiveness, the feeling that the team as accomplished the tasks, the members are satisfied, and the team has maintained survival and ready to take on another
A team is a work group that must rely on collaboration if each member is going to meet his full potential within an organization. It is also a small number of people that with complimentary skills who are committed to a common purpose, performance goals and approach for which they are equally responsible.
In today’s society, being able to work well with others is becoming an important ability in being effective in work or school. Teamwork plays important roles in many aspects, such as work, sports, and even video games. What is teamwork? Vince Lombardi, the legendary football coach, defined teamwork as "Individual commitment to a group effort -- that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, and a civilization work." This famous quote defines teamwork in general. Teamwork basically means that working together with others. For me, teamwork means success in many respects, such as jobs, sports, and games. Personally, I believe that teamwork makes work fun.
The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines a team as: “a number of persons associated together in work or activity,” or “a group of people who work together.” In the current information age more companies are relying on teams to solve challenging tasks and to reach more difficult goals. Since a team of professionals with varying expertise can produce solutions that an individual working alone would likely struggle with, it is no wonder teamwork is becoming increasingly valuable to companies across all industries.
Team Dynamics is how a group of two or more that works together for a common goal. One definition of a team is: two or more individuals associated in some joint action. (Webster’s New Collegiate Dictionary (1976). In the business & education world, these joint actions should have some mission or objective that achieves results like a research paper. My Team C has come together with a common goal: Writing a successful paper for week 5 on “What safeguards exist currently to ensure academic honesty & are they working?” For this to be possible we must learn how to work as a team.
When we think of the word team, individually many different ideas may come to mind about what a team really is. Some may think of an NFL team (Tennessee Titans), an NBA team (Sacramento Kings), or a NASA astronaut team with such pioneers as Edwin Aldrin, Jr. and Neil Armstrong as members. You might even think of the U.S. Navy, Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, or Marines as teams. In fact they all are, and they have a great deal in common as teams. However, for the purposes of this paper I will examine the characteristics of work teams, as they apply to organizations and I will supply answers to the following questions: What is a team? Where did the team concept come from? What are the types of teams? What are the advantages and disadvantages of having teams in organizations? What does it take to make a team effective?
The exploration of two models will show an interesting relationship when compared and contrasted. Both can increase competency levels in team building. The models are the Drexler/Sibbet Team Performance model (Human Performance Strategies) and the Four Stage Team Performance model (Developing Management Skills). When they have been used correctly they’ve been shown to improve efficiency and profitability in organizations. “Developing team skills is important because of the tremendous explosion in the use of teams in work organizations over the last decade (Developing Management Skills).” An examination of these models will show the similarities and differences they have in the context of team building.
A team is defined as a small number of people with complementary skills, who are committed to a common purpose, performance goals, and approach for which they hold themselves mutually accountable (Katzenbach et at., 2003). Spatz (2000) and Katzenbach et al. (2003) added elements such as complementary skills, commitment, common purpose and goals, common approach or strategy and mutual accountability are the important elements for a real team. Hackman (1990) had the comparable definition where team, which form by two or more individuals with different set of skill to work adaptively to achieve a common purpose and goal.
Seven tasks must be included in consideration of team dynamics and structure. The first of which is defining the goal, mission or function of a specific team. The team must know what it is being asked to accomplish. The second area of consideration is assessing what skills, abilities, knowledge or potential to acquire such would be needed amongst selected team members. Identification of potential team members should include an assessment of the skills, knowledge and abilities or the potential to acquire such so that ultimately the team has the building blocks with which to succeed in its mission, goal or function. This assessment must include an understanding of realistic potential contributions by potential team members with the included assessment of whether or not the acquisition of skills and knowledge can be made available through research and analysis.
Why do we form teams? The goal of a team is to be able to do something together that could not be done alone. In this big, international, world of business and life we do, in fact, need teams. We need to work together to do all that we truly cannot do alone. Yet, knowing that we need teams is only the first step of many. Everyone has some experience being on a team, but few of us are experts who have done extensive research. A byproduct of this is that there are many common myths that abound about teams. These include misconceptions related to varied topics such as: what makes a team, how to run a team effectively, general attitudes about teamwork, its (teamwork’s) value to business and even its very nature.
Working in teams provides an opportunity for individuals to come together and establish a rapport towards others within a group. Teamwork is classified as people with different strengths and skills who work together to achieve a common goal. When a team works well, specific objectives are fulfilled and satisfied. Teamwork plays a crucial role in implementing and fulfilling a common goal in a team project. Each member plays a role and takes on different responsibilities combined together. In different stages of teamwork, conflicts and arguments may occur for as members have different standpoints which need to be harmonized within the team. The key to having an effective teamwork is to explore each member's unique abilities to motivate them.
Many businesses place an emphasis on the importance of teamwork. A good team consists of people with different skills, abilities and characters. A successful team is able to blend these differences together to enable the organisation to achieve its desired objectives.
There are several steps of creating team effectiveness. The steps include context, composition, work design, and process. The steps of context are to help with the performance of the team. The four contextual factors are adequate resources, effective leadership and structure, climate of trust, and performance evaluation and reward system.
Teamwork is defined as, “the process of working collaboratively with a group of people in order to achieve a goal.” (Business Dictionary, n.d.) Ultimately, it provides us with a sense of accomplishment and a feeling of unity amongst each other. It allows us to create healthy relationships, and bond further with our peers, and generally, it’s a necessity for our lives. Teamwork aids us with developing imperative life lessons and skills. It also helps us gain a new perspective, and discover our strengths and weaknesses. Personally, I believe that I work well in a team, and I possess the skills of a good leader. Some ways in implementing effective teamwork is by giving the power to make decisions. Giving the team the power to make decisions is a great motivation for effective teamwork and to bring about radical change (p.2). Share clearly defined team objectives: when a team shares and gets feedback from one another their performance and overall effectiveness improves (p.3). Promote efficient team meetings: by having team meetings and using status reports makes a more productive meeting. The status reports helps with the meeting because the report is going to state what already has happened and what needs to be done (p.3). Make individual progress visible to the whole team: In order for the team to make effective progress in the workplace they need to make each individual team member work available to be seen (p.3). Make it fun by melting the ice: Working in a team should be fun and inspiring, not an obligation. A great strategy is having fun and humor that promotes effective teamwork in the workplace. Trying actives like ice breaker to boost the team spirits and bring about positive attitudes is good for the team
A team is a group of people with a full set of complementary skills required to complete a project. Team members work toward a common goal. A team becomes more than just a collection of people when a strong sense of mutual commitment creates synergy, thus generating performance greater than the sum of the performance of its individual members.
