CHAPTER THREE RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODOLOGY The purpose of this study is to explore how effective alternative school are at modifying disruptive behavior and improving academic performance in middle and high school. The study will track students sent to alternative school for a period of one year and study the change of improvement in the student through school records, observation and grades. The study will also test if there are any correlations between student nonsuccess in the classroom and teachers lack of classroom management skills, perception and stereotyping of the teacher. This chapter will describe the research design and methodology as follows: 1. The research question will be stated with the hypotheses 2. Details of the study design and the techniques for collecting data will be outlined 3. Explanation of how the data will be analyzed The research questions addressed were: 1. Are alternative schools successful in improving disruptive behavior and academic performance or do these schools enhance disruptive behavior and reduce academic success? a. What percentages of students return to the mainstream classroom, graduate, improve attendance, raise grades, stay in school, and improve behavior after attending alternative schools? b. What factors show that some teachers may use the write-up procedure as a way to eliminate the classroom of questionable behavior problems when proper behavior management techniques are the key? c. Do some teachers in the traditional educational system demoralize disruptive students through diminished expectations and stereotyped as failures? i. What factors show that there may be a link to at risk student’s failure to succeed in school due to teacher’s perception of the student’... ... middle of paper ... ...on to assess teachers behavior management skills will be taped and transcribed verbatim to ensure triangulation of the data. This method will be used based on information obtained from writings of emerson, Fretz, & shaw, 1995. Based on Merriam’s (1998) strategies, open coding will be used to sort and categorize interviews. The SPSS software package will be used to tabulate the data. Student’s percent of improvement behavorially and academically will be the independent variable. Since the researcher has worked in alterantive and traditional schools, several things will be used to ensue the trustworthiness of the qualitative data gathered: 1. Triangulation of data findings will be confirmed through interview transcripts and interview and questionnaire results will be reviewed by a third party as suggested by seidiman, 2006 to ensure validity of the data results.

Also, an overall respect for the unique cultural and language differences can change a reluctant student into one that feels he/she belongs. And most important of all teachers need to have the highest of expectations for all students and promote grit and talent development rather than have low expectations that make a students feel they are inferior. And finally teachers need to avoid the stereotype threat. And in order to, “prevent or remedy stereotype threat, teachers must be careful never to express the belief that certain skills are easier or harder for certain people, and should give all students opportunities to shine and show leadership in all types of tasks (
When one examines the history, the quality, and the long-term effects of public education, and compares them to the history, quality, and long-term effects of other education methods, such as home-education, public school is found lacking. Although it may be simpler to merely follow the modern status quo of sending one 's children to public school, it is imperative to thoroughly research other available options to determine if public school will provide more benefit to an individual family than it does harm to both one 's family and society as a whole. There are several school-level processes that may affect student outcomes either as direct effects of instructional practice or indirectly through support of students’ social-psychological needs (Rowan, B., Chiang, F.-S., Miller, R. J., 1996).
Education is fundamental in today’s society. It has become a sought after medium for attaining success. Many careers have set specific educational requirements for a person to even be considered for employment. The education that one receives can be achieved through different types of institutes. Many parents face the conundrum of sending their children to the right institution that will aid in their child’s future success. The choices seem to be in abundance but many people find themselves limited to a short list of obtainable institutions. The parents have a great deal of things that need to be thought through. This may require factors that have to be considered. Some of the factors include the following: curriculum, class sizes, cost and school’s quality but these are some questions that stand out. Does the type of school really help performance? Are there factors that hinder one type of institution from thriving? These decisions are crucial and, for the most part, will determine the type of institution the child will receive his or hers knowledge from.
Schools are in great need of systems, processes, and personnel who are able to support the needs of students with problem behavior. Research indicates, however, that (while I am a big, fat cheater) information has not been made available to teachers and other professionals in a format that allows these strategies to become common practice. Many teachers choose isolated behavioral strategies that are not applied immediately after the problem behavior has occurred.
There are different ways that a teacher can deal with a student’s undesirable behavior. Some of these strategies are: positive reinforcement, negative reinforcement, punishment or extinction. The type of r...
The data set used for this assignment was the grades.sav data file. The variables used were gender, GPA, total, and final. GPA and final were used in the histogram scales, along with skewness, kurtosis values, and scatter plot. This assignment included a sample size of (N) 105.

Once ethical approval was obtained, the principals in secondary schools in Kermanshah were contacted and the purpose of the study was explained and copies of the questionnaires were delivered to them. Participants could chose to complete the questionnaires anonymously, or confidentially if they chose to enter a prize draw to win one of three 50 thousand Tomans gift vouchers. This required the participants to provide an email address or phone number for prize notification. The requested email and phone number did not include participants’ names.
...articipate on schools activities, and parents do not have sufficient time to teach their children. For these reasons, traditional schools have many positive impacts on students. Even though that regular schools have some disadvantages, it is still a better than homeschooling. Families and critics must share their ideas to improve regular schools instead of supporting students to leave traditional schools to become a homeschooling. There are many ways that can improve the system of traditional schools to meet the need of children instead of transfer them to homeschooled. They are able to make traditional schools better than now by developing curriculums and teachers, lowering the number of students on classes, and adding subjects that many students want. Instead of transfer to homeschooling, they can all participate to improve traditional schools to be better.
