No two teachers are alike, each of us has to work to find our own style, but it seems that there are some characteristics that all effective teachers share while ineffective teachers tend to repeatedly make the same mistakes. This is not a black or white situation, you are not labeled as effective or ineffective and then written off until you make a big change; there is a spectrum of effectiveness. Each day is a new chance to have an impact, an opportunity to put together the puzzle that is our students’ education, and some days might be easier than others. There isn’t a magic formula or a definite path to being an effective teacher, there is simply advice. It takes a blend of many qualities to be a truly effective teacher who has a lasting impact on their students, not only academically but personally as well.
1. Good Classroom Managers – “Effective teachers spend the first two weeks teaching students to be in control of their own actions in a consistent classroom environment” (p. 3). Good classroom management is not simply about rules and punishment; it is about setting a tone of consist expectations for the year that allow the class to progress in a safe, thoughtful and respectful manner. A teacher who is a good classroom manager conveys to the students what is expected, facilitates their learning of procedures and processes then leaves them to be responsible for their actions. Good classroom management allows for the formation of a consistent, safe environment for students to learn, explore and grow.
2. Positive Expectations – “The belief in positive expectations is based on research, which demonstrates that the learner will produce what the teacher expects the learner to produce” (p. 11). Teachers with positive expectations s...

I recognize the benefit of these things, and am more than happy to use them as a resource, but my distance from them gives me a limited view of their potential. To combat this tunnel vision, it will be very important for me to collaborate with colleagues to gain insight into what they’re doing and what is working for them, and then explore how I can bring their ideas into my own classroom. The characteristics I have listed barely scratch the surface of what makes an effective teacher, and, I’m fairly certain that the difficulties I’m going to face are sure to be much more complex and prevalent than they seem now. I’m not sure what I can do to prepare for them other than think and plan as best as I can but remain open to input and advice and know that I’ll have to adjust, rethink and replan when the times comes.
