When asked about effective writing, many people respond that it is the act of placing the thoughts together in a logical manner. This response is too narrow because it suggests that effective writing is only a matter of getting the writing code correct. It also suggests that writing degenerates from the thought, which is not the case. Although the definitions of effective writing has nothing to do with effective writing itself, there are various points of effective writing that can be used to achieve effective writing. In simple terms, an effectively writing material must be preplanned, organized, revised and properly edited.
In writing, the writer must begin by prewriting. This means the writer must brainstorm and collect the required parts in time. One of the most common mistakes that people make in writing is to fail to prepare in time. When one fails to plan in time, it means the writing will be done in hurry, and sometimes the writing might lack objectivity (Carey & Fowler, 1986). When the writer has the basic knowledge of the content of the writing, he or she is able to refine the ideas and combine them to produce a quality article. For example, an article that makes reference to previous research is considered to be objective because the analysis of the situation will not only be based on the perspective of the writer alone, but will be complement with reputable research.
Organization is also important for effective writing. There will be no point of having proper research but with the information presented in a less organized manner. A good writer should be keen on all these requirements because there are always some points allocated for conformity to the formats and instructions.
In sum, it is clear that effective writing is something that virtually everyone can achieve. All that is required is dedication from the writer. The writer must be objective enough from the beginning. Part of the objectivity is the preparation for the writing by having in place all there required materials and information on the topic of the discussions. Organization is a key element of defective writing. The point must be arranged in a logical manner and must be flowing from the beginning to the end. Lastly, there is the need o conform to the required formats.
As I look back into my high school years, I thought I wrote papers well. But then coming into a college environment, my papers were mediocre. By overlooking at my past papers, I found that they were unorganized, sloppy and had bad use of diction. From now on, I will use the tools I learned in English 1100-40 as a foundation for the future papers I intend on writing in college. Following the criteria of organizing ideas so that they flow, impacting the reader with diction and also by being creative, will help become an ideal writer. Following the criteria of staying motivated in short and long term goals, taking responsibility for actions and finally the ability to study well will help me develop into a supreme student.
The focal point of Chapter 4 of Successful College Writing is on how to critically read and decipher text and visuals. It highlights the importance of not just looking at the surface of the words, but diving into their true meaning. Authors put every word and picture into their work for a reason, and it is your job to ensure that you do not fall victim to biases and false information. It is crucial to learn how to identify author's tones, opinions, and overall purpose in their writings. Learning how to analyze these patterns will better equip you in acquiring accurate information and also not adopting these deceptive techniques yourself.
I am more knowledgeable about invention, arrangement, style, and delivery, all in which create a masterful piece of text. A few examples, I have learned to organize and construct my thoughts and ideas clearer. I have been taught to use stronger transitions and focus more on the delivery and content of the body element of essays. Further, the instructions and advice I have received throughout this term have influenced my understanding of the purpose of writing. My outlook on writing has been modified by shifting my perception of writing from, writing to prove I am a good writer by perceiving it as using “fluffy” or BIG words to impress my audience. I grew to understanding that good writing’s purpose is to engage the writer by mind-striking ideas and arguments, which therefore will prove and title me as a “good writer”.
When a person begins writing a paper it can prove to be a difficult task. Where do they begin, and how do they get to where they need to be? The articles “Shitty first Drafts” by Anne Lamott and “Accordions, Frogs, and the 5 Paragraph Theme” by Rob Jenkins bring together freewriting and careful organization into a symbiotic harmony. One has the reader focusing on letting their creative thought flow, and the other has their focus on an effective and adaptive formula. While each have their own unique viewpoint on how the writer can initially achieve their goals, the end goal is the same. With practice and skill, a little bit of freewriting and a little bit of organization can go a long way.
After reading the “College Writing” article, I can compare myself to that article because the article actually tells me what my college professors expect me to do when I reach into that level. I feel like everything I learned from my previous classes and what I did in those previous classes had nothing to do with what college professors require me to do. For example, in the “College Writing” article it said, “The five paragraph theme is a good way to learn how to write an academic essay.” I realized that in college we go beyond the academic essay, so why am I still being taught the five paragraph essay? Shouldn’t we be prepared for the college five page, six page or even seven page essays? If the article tells me exactly why the five paragraph essay is not a good method to be used, than why am I still being taught to write a five paragraph essay? When it comes to writing, I wish I can just run away from it, because writing has been my least favorite thing to do.

Because of these requirements and English not been my first language it has been hard to performance a good writing style.

The reason for this is that some professors are trying to teach their students a different aspect of writing an essay or a paper. Two views on this particular subject that I found interesting were Maxine Hairston’s essay "Diversity, Ideology, and Teaching Writing" and also Thomas Bray’s newspaper article "Memorial Day and Multiculturalism". These essays are two totally different views on how diversity and multiculturalism is to be applied in America or taught in the college writing classroom.
Overall this semester, I believe my writing in this course has been one of my strongest areas and I am excited to keep getting better at this skill. With my mother’s help during middle and high school, my papers have improved significantly and now I think I have a firm grasp on writing for various disciplines, but particularly professional settings like social work. I picked up on APA format quickly after doing MLA for several years and it now feels like second nature to me. There are certainly still formatting areas to improve upon and learn more about, but at this stage, I think I am progressing steadily. Thirdly, I am able to find appropriate sources easily to reference in my activity analyses, which is crucial as I advance in the program.
