Effective Apps for Use in the Classroom
There are over 500,000 apps in Apple’s iTunes Store and the authors noted that there are many useful ones that can be appropriate to support learning and teaching (Norris & Soloway, 2012). Carr and Prater (2013) stated “classroom with the iPads involved students utilizing apps to reinforce skill acquisition of letters/sounds, sight/spelling words” (p. 3857).
Because there are few studies that have looked at the efficacy of using iPad apps in elementary school, for reading and writing, I have used studies that show promise at that level because of the success found in higher grades. One such report determined that iPads and educational apps are appropriate and effective in grades 6-12. Teachers have their own technique to integrate technology seamlessly in educational standards under the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), which can be used in all school systems for ensuring proper usage and high quality education (Cohen, 2012).

Tablets can help improve the way students attain their studies. Students who are interviewed provide convincing arguments in favor of the technology. They claim that the iPads are “eco-friendly,” “help with organization skills” because they cannot lose or forget assignments or books, and “are really easy to use” (Morristown High School). The video effectively communicates the intended message through the use of personal comments from students, concrete examples, and insight from the perspective of teachers.

In conclusion, iPads are detrimental to young children's social skills; cause harm to balance, posture, muscle development and fine motor skills; are liable to cause an addiction in younger children; and slow down the ability to process words and sounds as well as limiting vocabulary. These reasons are concrete proof that children up to the age of seven should not be using devices in a one-on-one environment for the six hours daily that they are at school. As a country, do we want to have our younger generation being dependent on their smartphones, tablets, and internet; or do we want strong leaders who can think for themselves? The world of technology brings about many new improvements and shows no sign of slowing down. Many people spend their day to day lives utilizing the great aspects of technology doing almost anything imaginable. Through technology teachers and students can connect and expound upon the many fields of education. Technology is an ever growing aid in education that has increased awareness, communication, and accessibility. How is technology shaping education? The uses of mobile devices and applications have shown a great influence in the education system.
With technology progressing from drones fulfilling shipments to electronic books becoming cheaper, major companies such as Apple and Amazon have had a big impact on not only the tech industry but the publishing industry as well. Companies are outputting resources like IBook’s and the Kindle bookstore to take full advantage of the transition to digital publishing. As a result of this we have greener, more budget friendly books, and outdated traditional copies of text. With the introduction to these resources it is making the lives of students and the mass market more convenient. Students are now able to purchase books on one device that won’t weigh their bags down on a daily basis. Companies have created bookstores that can be accessed from devices that we use every day, resulting in paperless copies of books that are substantially cheaper than the traditional hard copy. E-books are replacing physical books and textbooks rapidly, and as a result they are becoming more widely and readily available for students.
As more people began to access the Internet through smart phones and tablets rather than laptops and computers, it is not a surprise that they would also want to transform the American education system by bringing tablets into classrooms. In fact, a few schools around the country have already replaced textbooks with tablets and have seen improvements in students’ standardized test scores. Using tablets instead of textbooks is not only convenient and helpful, but it can also reduce the amount of paper wastes in school. However, it is not a good idea to completely transform textbooks with tablets with the current technology, for it can not only be damaging to the environment and costly to set up, but also might not be effective in improving K-12 education in the long run.
With advances in digital technology, there is increasing popularity of reading electronic books over traditional paper books. For example, ebooks now outsell traditional ones on Amazon. Although paper books still have tremendous values and have own market niche, as evident from the number of books placed on shelves at various retailers, e-books will be the trend of text publishing going forward. There are many glaring advantages that e-books have over traditional paper books, as e-books are more convenient to carry, have greater update capacity, have greater storage capacity, more accessible and environmental friendly. This paper will therefore elaborate on the advantages of e-books and provide a comparative analysis of e-books versus traditional books.
