According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Arkansas ranked third highest in the nation for children taking medication for Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder in 2011. At that time, 9.9% of children in Arkansas were taking medication, out of the 14.6% currently reported to be diagnosed with ADHD. Arkansas ranked second highest in the nation for children diagnosed with this disorder. (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2011) This research study will answer the question as to whether or not the amount of sugar consumed affects the behavioral performance of children with ADHD. The purpose of this study is to determine if children are more hyperactive or display an increase in negative social behavior after an increase in sugar consumption. The results may help inform parents of the affected children about prevention of outbursts and negative behaviors through a controlled diet. Evaluation will be conducted using a case-control design with strawberries and strawberry-flavored candy. For the purpose of this study, children will be observed to determine if the sugar causes behavioral changes. The hypothesis is the amount of sugar consumed will cause an increase in hyperactivity and/or negative social behavior in the children with ADHD. To test this hypothesis, the researcher will have a case group of children diagnosed with ADHD and a control group of children who do not show symptoms of ADHD. (National Resource Center on ADHD, 2014) These treatments may include parental education, behavioral management techniques, medication, occupational therapy, school programming, and diet. The common belief is increased sugar may cause increased symptoms in persons with this disorder. Children are the likely examples for this theory because their symptoms tend to be more pronounced than symptoms in adults. Children are given treats or snacks throughout their day, which may often times be candy or other sugary foods or beverages. During this study, the expectation is to determine if these sugary snacks are causing increased hyperactivity or negative social behavior and if a healthier alternative might be a better option.
