The Effect of Media Violence on Our Kids

We the people can think media violence has no effect on our kids and our youth, but it is a growing pain in the side of our communities and is crippling the minds of our own children and other humans inhabiting this earth. Adolescents living in this society are constantly surrounded by: violence, hate, anger, and strong sexual content, which all lead to a peculiar view on how these issues are seen in their eyes. Media violence desensitizes individuals, and also causes a lack of empathy and disregard of logical thinking that may result in aggressive behaviors.

A major result of the constant viewing of media violence is the robust impact of desensitization. Research has shown that, “about 90% of movies, 68% of video games, 60% of TV shows, and 15% of music videos include some depictions of violence.” Also, “ kids as young as 8 are spending nearly 7.5 hours with media every day”( Knorr).These statistics show and prove that adolescents and adults are constantly surrounded by influences that effect your logical thinking. Other studies have shown that all of these influences have had a dramatic effect on the way youths and adults cope with certain obstacles they have see in their life, for example: when some experience death they tend to show no emotion while others are mourning greatly. While others may have no sympathy to those who are beaten, raped, or treated with disrespect, all caused by the desensitization of their minds caused by the sinful and neglecting music, videos, and movies surrounding communities.

A top statistic researched by many and used to support the claim of, “Desensitization,” is that, “many of the perpetrators were reported to have been fans of violent video games like “Doom” and “Counter-Strike.” (Horton) Th...

...s considered to be the most horrendous stage of the after effects where some may take action after the initial exposure. Looking back earlier in the paper the example of the Columbine high school shooting is a prime example. It proves what can happen to people after extensive amounts of violence and the horrendous events one can commit under the influence of the media. Another prime example would be the shooter, Adam Lanza. He was a frequent video gamer who was indulged in the counter strike series in which eventually lead him down the dark path he ended on.
