Effects of Global Warming

945 Words2 Pages

The Earth is getting hotter every year. Global warming has caused the Earth to get hotter every year since the 1800’s (Blashfield). Global Warming is an increase in temperature over the years (David). An excess of greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide, in the Earth’s atmosphere causes this phenomenon. Carbon dioxide acts like a blanket around the atmosphere that traps all of the heat that originally goes in from the sun. With all the extra heat that is being kept in the atmosphere, the Earth’s surface eventually gets hotter. Many habitats are changing due to this and animals have to adapt to these changes in order to survive.
There are ways to prevent or slow down global warming. As individuals, we could help by going green. Going green means implementing certain lifestyle changes designed to help people live in a more eco-friendly way ("What Does Going Green Mean"). One suggestion for going green is to cycle or walk instead of driving because cars are major contributors of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Another suggestion is to plant more trees because trees take in the carbon dioxide and give off oxygen. What else can we do as individual residents of the Earth and as a nation to help protect and preserve our planet?
Introduction
Global warming is an increase in temperature over the years on the Earth’s surface (David). In the years between 1987 and 1988 more forest fires were recorded than ever before in North America. During this time over ten million acres including wildlife were destroyed (Blashfield, 10). Many disasters such as extreme droughts occurred in over thirty states in America in 1988. In 1988, President George Bush called this “the year the Earth spoke back” (Blashfield, 11). From 1950 to 1980 the temperatu...

Conclusion
If global warming continues, we would not be able to survive on this planet (Blashfield). The temperature would be too much for the human body to handle, our food supply would be affected and we would perish.
Throughout the years there have been changes in the Earth’s temperature. If it gets warmer it may cause the ice at the poles to melt, resulting in more natural disasters, and food shortages. But we can stop it before it is too late. We can install solar panels in our homes. We can also ride in eco-friendly cars. We can start using renewable energy such as wind. In my opinion we should all take part in stopping global warming because this is our home planet.
