Educational philosophies do not singlehandedly define who we are as educators. There is almost always a mix between philosophies that identify our values as educators. I found that I have identified most with a progressive philosophy, also known as a pragmatist philosophy. This philosophy stood out to me when I had first learned about the different types and my guess that I fit into this category most was confirmed when I scored my sheet.
A progressive or pragmatic philosophy is one that focuses on the entire child. This means that, as an educator, I focus on making sure that the child benefits from education more than just learning new topics. This is important because there is so much I can do for children as a teacher. Children are more in control of their own learning as stated by an older publication at Oregon State, “students should test ideas by active experimentation. Learning is rooted in the questions of learners that arise through experiencing the world. It is active, not passive” (Cohen 1999, 4). Children are encouraged to figure out how the world works all on their own. When I teach at the elementary school level, it is easy to see how this is the best option. Children at that age learn so much by doing rather than by listening. Experiences stick in their minds more than just words or being told how something works.
This philosophy describes me because I feel it involves caring about the children’s emotional lives more than just caring about what I am teaching them. There is more to teaching than just making sure the content is absorbed. Making sure that the child is emotionally and physically well before trying to teach them new concepts is important because if a child does not feel comfortable in their learning ...

All of these standards allow for a child to have control over their education, which is, to me, what the progressive educational philosophy is all about. Children are able to focus on real world knowledge and on developing themselves when this educational philosophy. The fact that this philosophy correlates with the standards I chose so well on educating and caring for the whole child makes me even more excited to see how it will play out and become active in my future classroom. With the help of this philosophy, and the mixture of others that allow for better teaching in the classroom, I hope to inspire and educate children in all aspects of their lives.
