Educational Autobiography

When we were little we had so many different ideas of what we wanted to be when we grew up, they some times change daily depending on what is revolving around in life at the time. Children are very impressionable. I would say I wanted to be a vet because I got a new dog and caught a lizard in the same week and then change my mind to being a writer because I got a smiley face on a journal assignment. I’m not sure if it worked like this for anyone else but once it was really time to know what I wanted to be when I grew up I had no earthly clue. Nor do I think schools do enough to support real life interests of children. We go through school having to take all these required classes and in the end only get to choose a handful of electives that they might spark a students interest. Choosing a career choice really sneaks up on you in life, or at least it did for me. I do recall taking a few tests throughout my school career that involved my interests and personality but they were all in high school. There are so many different classes I could have taken that would of helped me in the long run with my career path if I had of known that working with children was what I wanted to do. Standardized testing treats all children the same. Not every child is good at reading a prompt or short story and then writing a paragraph relevant to it nor is every child good at looking at a diagram on paper and interrupting it to the correct answer. The students have no personal interest in these tests. Students taking a standardized test is not meaningful. How can we expect them to be able to do their best when the tests don’t give them what they need to do their best. Also, adults put so much stress on students about standardized testing, which only makes it worse. If age permits I want my students to take a personality and interests test upon entering my class. Anything I can do that says “Hey, you are special and you need to take your skills and interests and run with them”. Basing a learning environment around student interests and skills is setting your students up for higher success. Have story time, let them show and tell, listen to them, try new things, share stories from your life and connect everything you possibly can to real-life and outside of the school environment.
