Education’s purpose if many were asked would say it is to reach the next step until a career. Children are told to do well now in order to obtain a job that pays well and is good in position. All parents want to see the best in his or her children which is understandable, yet it is important to set out realistic goals since not all children will become what their parents have in mind. If one was to ask what the purpose of kindergarten was the answer would be to get to elementary school of course, then elementary to prepare for middle school and so on. Children are moving up in education in terms of levels but in knowledge are doing mediocre. With that in mind the true purpose of education should be to successfully prepare students with concepts and skills they can carry out throughout life. Education should allow for more creative answers and less standard answers expected from students. Less memorization going on and more applying of curriculum to better retain concepts. Also having equal resources and teachers for all students no matter their status and background.
In a better education, creative answers are accepted more and standard expected answers become less of a measure of what children apprehend. When children enthusiastically raise their hand to answer a question they are usually confident in their response. Textbooks and the correct answers may not always align with what the student says. If the wrong answer is given then teachers should try to work with the reasoning that the student gave rather than nudge them to the textbook or correct answer right away. Equal resources and teachers for all students no matter their status and background. All schools should have enough textbooks in good condition for all students. There should be extracurricular activities in all schools and should not be taken away because they are not viewed as “necessary” or that funding can go to something else. School districts should make it a goal to have affective and experienced teachers to make childrens education more valuable. In Keeping Track Oakes contends, “High-track classes consistently offered richer learning opportunities and more resources, including more highly qualified teachers than low-tracked classes.” No student should have to be treated differently from another in any aspect. All students should be able to have access to tutoring, teachers who challenge them, and resources to help them outside of school.
