Children’s laureate, Michael Morpurgo claims, “It 's the teacher that makes the difference, not the classroom.” With a child’s potential future at stake, it isn’t surprising that America is always trying to better the education system. After all, the children are the future! The question still remains as to what is the best way to educate the future. There are two main types of education available in present day: single-gender or dual-gender classrooms. There are advocates for each type of educational system. As a dual-gender education student, personal experiences have left a salient impression and provided opportunities that represent the real world. The debate continues as each side asks the essential question and research has proven the harms of single-gender education. Single-gender classrooms would not improve the quality of education in American public schools because of the lack of evidence and the social harms to the children.
Single-gender educational classrooms have been prevalent since almost the beginning of an education system. In fact, an estimated five hundred public schools offer single-sex classrooms or schools in America alone (Lewin). Five hundred schools stays minimal in the grand scheme of things. In 1995, America only had three public single-gender schools available (Schemo A1). Advocates of single-gender classrooms argue that to have offer of around five hundred schools as an incredible feat. This “incredible feat” isn’t very astonishing compared to the 93,000 accessible public schools, respectively (Schemo A1). These changes are not limited to high school classrooms. In conclusion, single-gender education may seem beneficial at the surface but in all reality, to the students, its not. When the empirical evidence is looked at, the results are mixed at best. Also, the segregation limits some students to what they feel would be the best education simply because they were born the other gender. Stereotypes are beginning to become a problem in these schools as well. The impact of the negative stereotypes are causing hindered social skills. Even with the negative effects, it stands that parents deserve the right to choose what type of education they want their children to be taught in. They have a responsibility and a right to chose for their children’s best interest. Single-gender classrooms will not improve the quality of education in American public schools.
