In order to gain more information on the ways in which student who are suffering from mental health issues, it is essential to know what services are in place for these students in our school. One resource at Sheyenne High School is built into the special education department in the form of building level special education representatives or SEBLRs. These educators are responsible for ensuring each special education teacher has the resources he or she needs to support the students on their caseload. They also provide educational support to general education teachers who are working toward educating students on Individualized Education Plans. Ms. Jana Oistad is one of two SEBLRs in the building. She qualifies for this position due to her eight years of experience in special education as well as her Master’s Degree of Special Education with an emphasis in Autism Spectrum Disorders. Ms. Oistad is a vocal advocate for the students she serves and was selected for this interview in order better understand her position and how that position can better be used to support students at Sheyenne High School.
Insights
Most diagnoses for students involve a specific learning disability; these are commonly comorbidly diagnosed with various mental health disorders. When working with students, it is often necessary to address their mental health issues first before the learning disabilities can be effectively supported. One of the most increasingly commonly seen mental health disorders among students on her caseload is Autism Spectrum Disorder. One way students are supported is through daily sessions with their case managers in study halls. In order to better serve students who have various reasons for being on an individualized education plan, teachers need to find a way to keep that information organized so that it is readily available when it is needed. Finding and sharing a way to make that happen in a classroom setting is the next step in providing the best possible education to students with special needs. Additionally, the communication between the special education departments and the general educator needs to be clear, particularly when outlining expectations for all parties involved.
Conclusion
Each member of an educational team is vital to the continued success of student learning. Students need to know they have an advocate on their side, but they also need to see that team working together to provide them with the best education possible, whatever that may take for each individual.
