The United States of America has had a long history of education systems regarding what should be taught in schools and by what methods. In the mid-1800s in the United States there was a struggle between private and public school systems of who would get funding money, public schools won that struggle and most of the education funding went to the public schools (Wooster 5). But after that struggle was solved another one rose, what should be taught in public schools (Wooster 11). The education debate of what should be taught in public schools led to a movement called “progressive education” that would have two [parts]” (Wooster 11). “The first movement changed the way American schools were organized and controlled” and “the second wave altered the school curriculum” (Wooster 11). The problem of what should be taught in public schools has been a problem in the education system until now. Many reformations have come up to try and solve the struggle of what should be taught in school such as the “Outcome Based Education” system (Sykes 242), the No Child Left Behind program, and now the Common Core State standards. All of these reformations and counter reformations have led the education system in this country downhill, each one making it worse and worse (Sykes 225). All of the programs trying to fix our education system has failed due to lack of teacher participation, kids’ apathy towards education and learning, and the “dumbing” down of school curriculum (Joy). This country has been struggling with education reform for a very long time and it has not been succeeding. These reforms have not been succeeding because of a lack of some core values such as the appreciation of teachers, the uniqueness of each child (and how he or she should be approached), and the apathy that an increasing number of children harbor towards learning. The Common Core Standards tried to fix these problems, but they went about fixing the problem the wrong way and with the wrong people. Common core also instilled these changes way to fast and did not give the former education system time to see what is wrong with the standards in order to attempt to fix it. Common Core Standards are a good idea, but so far, as it played out through the states, it has had far more negative than positive effects.
America has not changed it’s educational system in over two hundred years. For this reason, our students and population are falling further and further behind. Our society has done nothing but move forward, so why hasn’t our learning? Everybody has a story, opinion, or response to education. We need to invest in refining our tools to succeed, to create a better sense of self, and a stronger, more well-rounded nation. The American educational system is hurting students by passing them without merit and relying on standardized tests; however, many are now running back to these hollowed halls to ensure better futures.
In Rereading America Michael Moore entitled “Idiot Nation” focuses on the failing educational system in the United States of America. The American nation has decreased in their studies and have lowered their standards, yet America still claims they have their priorities in order, which is education. Moore attempts to persuade his readers that the people who are to blame are lack of education in politics and the budget cuts they are making, however, politics blame teachers for making America decrease in their schooling test scores. America’s public school system started off very rough, but through the dedication of many hard-working Americans, it was starting to shape into a system that allowed all children, regardless of race, gender, religion, or nation of origin, to have an education.
The greatest country in the world still has problems evenly distributing education to its youth. The articles I have read for this unit have a common theme regarding our education system. The authors illustrate to the reader about the struggles in America concerning how we obtain and education. The American Education System has been a core component to the development of generations since it became a public system in the 1870s. Since then more rules, higher expectations for some, and even lower expectations for others have been added to the original structure. In recent years, many debates have surfaced over whether the American education system is failing. Too few they believe the American Education System is on the right track. Most researchers however have shown statistics that it is in fact slowly declining as new acts and regimens are added. It has been on a downward spiral for years and citizens have been watching it happen, the lack of government funding, acts like the No Child Left behind Act, focus in the wrong places, and the curriculum set up is acting as a deterrent for success.
These learning goals outline what a student should know and be able to do at the end of each grade Anya Kamenetz author of "Tough Week for the Common Core" writes that “[t]he Common Core [is] not, strictly speaking, national standards. They were developed independently of the federal government, and states are not under a mandate to adopt them,” but then goes on to say that the “standards received a big boost in the form of funding incentives from the Obama administration” (1). These “big boost[s]” are what concerns many like Bobby Jindal. “A few years ago, Jindal was one of the Common Core 's biggest proponents. But he has since had a change of heart” (3). Bobby Jindal, along with many other opposers, question what would happen if state who had implemented common core in their schools suddenly dropped the plan? Anya Kamenetz furthers her article by stating that the three states who have already done this “now face spending tens of millions of dollars to create new standards, adopt new materials to go with them and retrain teachers” (1). Some might say that this decrease in funding is expected because the federal government had agreed to fund a specific program and although schools don 't have to use that program, those who don 't have to find the funding for their programs themselves. Without a doubt the American education system has had multiple examples that have shaped what it is today. There have been individuals that have placed emphasis such as Mann that brought the common school concept to light. In addition, there were landmark court cases that allowed minorities to also receive equal educations. Furthermore, there has been strong political influence over the years of American education development. This paper will focus on the importance of Horace Mann, John Dewey, the Science and Math Education Movement, and the No Child Left Behind Act.

Children are entering a world that is requiring more and more than before. Society is changing meaning education must change to keep up with society. “The standards were drafted by experts and teachers from across the country and are designed to ensure students are prepared for today’s entry-level careers, freshman-level college courses, and workforce training programs” (What Parents Should Know, n.d.). The focus is to allow students to think critically and be able to problem solve; skills needed in life. The school system needs to be changed entirely, but solutions to this problem simply aren’t out there. Experimentation needs to be done in certain school systems to determine the most successful method. Until then, the United States of America will continue to support a failing school system and will continue to produce uneducated adults.
The first step in discovering what hides behind the curtain of Common Core is judging its foundations. It its most primitive form, the ideology of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) began as the Elementary and Second Education Act in 1965, which minimally increased the amount of financial support from the federal government which would be allowed in the public school system. The next major step for this government-endorsed education arrived more controversially in 2002, and was renamed the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act. The NCLB raised concerns from individuals of all sides of the political spectrum, as the act enabled even greater federal intervention in the developing of policies in local education establishments. Additionally, the NCLB mandated nationwide testing, that, while states were allowed to develop their own tests so long as they aligned with the NCLB standards, had to be reported in order to determine if any

Sadly over 40 years later, the the educational revolution still hasn't taken off. The “pieces” are still lying around unassembled and the education in the schools is still tolerated. The need for change of public schools in the United States has been emerging since of the the passage of Pennsylvania's Common School Act in 1834. The Common School Act of 1834, set up a "general” system of education by common schools. People are continuously saying how children are the future and we must nurture them in order to ensure a bright future for our country. However, we are failing at a very basic level. The current education system in the United States is extremely poor. Drop-out rates for high school students continue to rise and student performance has been steadily declining. An article published in 1999 showed exactly how much of a crisis the American education system is really in. The article was written by William J. Bennett, former U.S. Secretary of Education, and it ranked high school seniors form 21 industrialized nations based on their performance in math, science, and advanced physics. American high school seniors ranked 19th in math, 16th in science and last in advanced physics.
This book, Dare The School Build a New Social Order by George Counts, is an examination of teachers, the Progressive Education Movement, democracy and his idea on how to reform the American economy. The book is divided into 5 different sections. The first section is all about the Progressive Education Movement. Through this, George Counts points out many downsides and weaknesses of this ideal. He also talks about how he wants teachers to lead society instead of following it. In the second section, he examines 10 widespread fallacies. These fallacies were that man is born free, that children are born free, they live in a separate world of their own, education remains unchanged, education should have no bias, the object of education is to produce professors, school is an all-powerful educational agency, ignorance rather than knowledge is the way of wisdom, and education is made to prepare an individual for social change.
Education is a very important aspect of the lives of all people all over the world. What we learn, not just in the classroom, shapes who we are. We take our education everywhere we go. We use it when talking to our buddies about sports or music, we use it while solving a math problem, we use our education while debating with our family whether or not we should watch TV or go to the movies. Our education is the foundation of who we are, since every decision we make and every thought we think is dependent on what we know. Imagine how different the world would be if everyone craved learning to such a degree that at lunch tables all over the world the topic of conversation isn't who likes who, or how drunk someone got over the weekend, but it would be what books were read over the weekend, and what new ideas were thought of. This crave for learning would be an ideal but still suggests need for improvement with the current educational system. It seems that the problem with education is that somewhere along the lines the human race forgot (assuming they, at one point, understood how valuable information is) that learning is not just a mandatory process, but also an opportunity to transcend and open the gateway to a better understanding.
