Education is a social system that is often multifaceted and is considered one of the complex social problems of the world. Furthermore, “educational success is measured by achievement on standardized tests, and has become the central focus of the U.S. educational policies; specifically much of the current political rhetoric revolves around evaluating the competency of teachers or schools, introducing “competition” and “choice” to current public schooling options and increasing mandatory student testing” (Roscigno, Tomaskovic-Devey, & Crowley, 2006, p. 2121). To further reiterate on this idea, two theorists, Israel et al. and Roscigno et al., have developed concepts of how the influence of family social capital, the community social capital, and inequalities of place have an affect on student’s educational achievement. Therefore, despite education’s many problems, these theorists in sociology have proposed both the problems and possible solutions to combat the structural problems of education and it’s quality.
According to Israel et al., there is more evidence to indicate that our nation’s well being is linked to having an educated and skilled workforce in order to support technological advancements and a global environment. Therefore, improvement in public education is considered to be the most important goal in our workforce development. In order to do this, Israel states “that achieving a skilled and educated workforce depends largely on introducing major improvements into our nation’s public schools as well as families and the community must be engaged in helping youths develop the knowledge and skills they need to function effectively in tomorrow’s workplace” (Israel, Beaulieu, & Hartless, 2009, p. 44).
