“Man is the only creature that strives to surpass himself, and yearns for the impossible.” Eric Hoffer once said this wonderful quote. It relates to The Great Gatsby in the way that F. Scott Fitzgerald explains that a dream is impossible to achieve because it always indirectly involves another person who only wants to achieve their happiness; this crushes the world and the people.
No matter how hard a person ties to achieve their dreams it remains impossible because a dream always indirectly involves another person. Gatsby dreams of being rich and to achieve the, “American Dream” at the age of seventeen. Unfortunately, he comes from, “shiftless and unsuccessful farm people” (Fitzgerald 98), so he must leave. As he grows older his dreams shifts to those of being rich, to those being marries and in love as he meets Daisy. Daisy dreams otherwise. She dreams of being high class and rich and to have a husband that cares. Gatsby could not provide her with this life. However, Tom could provide her with, “string[s] of pearls” (76). Thus, they achieve marriage. A selfish marriage. One that...
