Instructional approach described in the case study
The case study I will be examining is Case 3 which is a lesson plan named “Molly and her Pilgrim”. This lesson plan is designed for 4th -6th grade Social studies or Language arts and will take about two to three class periods to complete. The instructional approach that is described in this case study is a mostly cooperative learning. The teacher here is mostly playing the facilitator and providing students with some sort of direction by reading the book and reading the questions to students at certain times during the lesson. Cooperative learning is a very is known as best practice and is a very effective strategy that will help student learning. In this lesson students will work on numerous different activities. This particular activity is known as best practice, which means it is very effective tool to help students understand the material they know. Students working in groups are a big part of this lesson and we will see how this can be effective and not effective.

Strengths and Weaknesses of this Instructional Approach
First I would like to discuss the strengths and weakness of this instructional approach. The KWL chart is an important aspect to this lesson. When students write down their prior knowledge this is very important as we learned before when talking about attention. “As stated in the PowerPoint having prior knowledge improves a student’s selective attention, the student may find it easier to identify and focus on important issues this is called top-down processing. Top-down processing focuses on the outside and teachers will be able to go more in detail once they assess the student’s prior knowledge. The weakness teachers might face with this KWL chart is if a student has recently came from a different country and doesn’t have any prior knowledge about thanksgiving this will be not as easy.
