It is every mountaineers dream to climb Mt. Everest, but according to history.com this is also a risky dream with about 240 known people who have died while trying to summit this mountain. Choosing the right guide to help you climb is vital for a successful climb. Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay are great guides for future climbers because they care about the safety of each other, their knowledge of detail, and their decision making skills all make them great guides for future climbers. Tenzing Norgay throughout his account of the climb found in his narrative “The Dream Comes True” talks about how he cared more about the safety of Sir Edmund Hillary than he did of himself. Tenzing states in his narrative that when Hillary was climbing the cliff he belayed Hillary up to the top of the cliff so; the ice would not give away on Hillary. Tenzing also states that he let Sir Edmund Hillary step up on the summit first and then he did. These two actions show that Tenzing Norgay cared more about the safety of Hillary than he did of himself. Even though Tenzing Norgay cared about the well-being of Sir Edmund Hillary, Hillary also cared about the well being of Tenzing Norgay. In Sir Edmund Hillary narrative ‘View from the Summit” he states that he cleared ice out of Tenzing Norgay mask so that Norgay could breathe. He also states that he toke a picture of Tenzing Norgay at the summit holding his ice axe and the flags. These actions mentioned above show that Sir Edmund Hillary cared about the well-being of Tenzing Norgay. Chapter 7: In chapter 7 Krakauer talks about how Everest has changed from a professionals trek to anyone's trek. He explains that many inexperienced people have climbed Mount Everest with the help of sherpas and guides. He also mentions about the determination of Everest and how in some instances in history people who weren't allowed into Tibet or Nepal but they snuck in and managed to climb and summit Everest
In the article, “Finding Your Everest” by Robert Medina, the Romeros reveal that they believe that parents cannot go too far to support their children’s dreams. For example, Mr. Romero claims that he is fully aware of the risks Jordan might face while climbing/mountaineering, yet he believes that Jordan isn’t being forced to keep going, wants to keep going, and is nowhere near the point where he’s mentally and physically exhausted. This shows that Mr. Romero believes that parents cannot go too far because he mentions that it’s Jordan’s call on whatever expedition they go on. In the memoir Within Reach: My Everest Story by Mark Pfetzer and Jack Galvin, the author Mark Pfetzer is faced with an extremely amazing yet scary challenge of climbing Mount Everest. Each event is the story has something to do with the nature that is around them at that moment but Pfetzer shows the readers that nature can be a way of life.
If Krakauer, Hall, Hansen, and the other climbers were not loyal to each other, death would have been inevitable for everyone. While the team is climbing, one of the more experienced climbers and sherpa, Lopsang, decides to clip himself to Sandy. When asked why he did so, he responded, “because Scott wants all members to go to summit, and I am thinking Sandy will be weakest member, I am thinking she will be slow, so I will take her first.” (Page 222). Lopsang knew that the climb was beyond difficult, and he showed loyalty to Sandy by assisting her when she was weak. Another example of loyalty from the novel was shown by Hutchison. Even though the men were suffering from exhaustion, frostbite, and fear, “Hutchison organized a team of four Sherpas to locate the bodies of Weathers and Namba, who had been left on the far side of the Col when Anatoli Boukreev brought in Charlotte Fox, Sandy Pittman, and Tim Madsen.” (Page 322). This shows extreme loyalty because these men were dying, but showed respect to the dead by finding their bodies in attempt to bring closure to their families. Hutchison created a strong bond between himself and others, and he showed loyalty to people even after they died. In addition to the teammates showing loyalty to each other, the Sherpas created bonds with the climbers. Hall recognizes the immense impact the Sherpas have on the team and says, “I want you all to remember we would have absolutely no chance of getting to the summit of Everest without their help.” (Page 68). Hall showed loyalty to the Sherpas by respecting them, and only allowing them to climb to certain heights if they were not properly trained. The climbers' experience in mountain climbing and at high altitudes varies; some of them are quite qualified, others very inexperienced and highly reliant on the guides. The actual summit push is when everything begins to fall apart.
As promised, his father took him to Mount Everest. As a result, Peak is given the opportunity to bury his past and emerge as an innocent boy. Though, when his father revealed why they were in South Asia, Peak embraced his father’s decision by wanting to climb Mount Everest, no matter what the cost. This lead one to believe that he was intrigued by this new opportunity. Peak’s journey was not easy and he faced opposition from his father’s group who did not want Peak to be first at the top of Everest. As a result, Peak’s selfishness had grown by him being kicked out of the group, as it states in the text, “This was when I realized Sun-Jo wasn’t with us. I was so mad he didn’t also get booted out of camp.” (Smith page 194). However, it was all just a hoax to please the entire group, which resulted in Peak and Sun-Jo trying to reach the summit
Meanwhile, Boukreev had zero writing experience before The Climb and even needed the help of DeWalt to co write with him. Unlike Krakauer, DeWalt had never climbed before and was nowhere near Everest during the 1996 disaster. Henceforth, the fact that DeWalt had zero climbing experience and subpar writing abilities, infinitely discredits the facts and debate presented by The Climb. Additionally, while Boukreev was a world renowned climber, Krakauer certainly did have some climbing experience including “a number of fairly extreme ice climbs in Canada and Colorado” (Krakauer 28). Moreover, Krakauer also climbed Mooses Tooth, “pulled off a solo ascent of the Devils Thumb”, and ascended Cerro Torre which was once “thought to be the world’s hardest mountain” before attempting Everest (Krakauer 27-28). For this reason, his knowledge in the subject of climbing is extraordinary and could be seen through his language throughout the book where he uses jargon such as crampons, rig safety tethers, and harnesses. Jon Krakauer is responsible for some of the deaths of people mentioned in the book because of the decisions he made. Krakauer himself said he had guilt for not fully helping the people with hypoxia. The timing and decisions he made for descending back down also did play a role in how he caused some people to die instead of helping
While Peak and his group are climbing a steep icewall, one of the climber’s ice axe broke. Peak decides to climb down and help the fellow climber. This act could have killed Peak, yet he would risk his own life for a friend. “Got him! I shouted down to Zopa”(202). This quote reveals that Peak saved his fellow climbers life. Also, when Peak is less than 10 feet away from the summit of Everest he lets Sun-Jo reach the top. Even though Sun-Jo was having issues up the whole mountain and Peak saved his life. Peak and Sun-Jo are both 14. They both would be the youngest to make it to the Summit of Everest. Sun-Jo is poor and all Sun-Jo wants to do is go to school. Peak lets Sun-Jo reach the summit and get all the money and fame. “I don’t have a reason for being here. I’m heading back down the north side”(230). This quote shows Peak is letting Sun-Jo to the summit, and Peak just climbs down the mountain, not even reaching the summit after Sun-Jo. “What?” Sun-Jo was appalled at the fact that Peak had decided not to conquer the summit of Mount Everest. How could he give up such a glorifying moment? Peak would have been the youngest boy to ever reach the summit, however, he realized he didn’t want the fame. Sun-Jo was only a few days older than him, and if Sun-Jo reached the summit and Peak did not, he would be the youngest person to summit Everest. Also, Sun-Jo’s family was living on the other side of the mountain and he needed to get to the other side so that he could reconnect with his family. Since Peak avoided his mother’s advice to think of himself and only himself, he did not make it to the top. Many other characters, unlike Peak, were selfish and although it helped some, others were less fortunate.
Throughout the novel, the protagonist encounters many difficulties when trying to reach his goal of climbing Mount Everest. He encounters problems, from illnesses to deaths but most affectively the catastrophic weather. But of course his expedition does not go as expected. On May 10th Krakauer reaches the summit after a extremely stressful and treacherous trek up, but only to have to scale down the mountain with his team in one of the most dangerous seasons in the history of Everest. Many things went wrong when they came down the mountain and throughout this book, Jon attempts to evaluate what exactly happened and how things went wrong. Imagine feeling guilty for making it out alive on a journey. In the nonfiction novel, Into Thin Air, by Jon Krakauer, he documents his journey to the summits of Mount Everest and ultimately accuses himself of holding responsible for the disaster on the mountain. After realizing only one-fourth of the people that climbed to the summits on May 10, 1996, made it back down to base camp alive, Krakauer theorizes why that was so. He attributes most of the reason for the disaster to the erratic weather, along with hubris, who wanted the thought of leading a group to the mountain. Despite those reasons, there is no ultimate reason for the deaths documented in the book, but bottom line the climbers that died didn’t thoroughly comprehend the danger they were going to encounter as a consequence that contributed to the disaster.
Everest is an unbelievable mountain that has taken the lives of a number of the greatest climbers in history. It was my job to ensure that clients make it up that treacherous mountain safely. My name is Rob Hall. I was the main guide and cofounder of a climbing company called Adventure Consultants. My friend, Gary Ball, and I used to be professional climbers. Together we succeeded in climbing to the highest summit on each of the seven continents in seven months. This was our greatest achievement. After this, we decided to start our own company guiding clients up large mountains. In May 1992, we successfully led six clients to the summit of Everest. Unfortunately, Gary died of cerebral edema in October 1993 during an attempt on the world’s sixth-tallest mountain. He died in my arms and the next day I buried him in a crevasse. Despite the pain that his death had caused me, I continued guiding for our company and eventually led thirty-nine climbers to the summit of Everest.
