Edgar Allan Poe is and was an amazing American poet and writer. He wrote many famous poems. Poe has been marked as the origin of both horror and detective fiction categories and many anthologies credit him as "The Architect" of the modern short story(Academy of American Poets). Poe was also part of the genre American Romantic movement which involved many other writers(Poemhunter).
Edgar Poe was born on January 19, 1809 in Boston Massachusetts(Academy of American Poets). Poe was the second child of Elizabeth Arnold Hopkins Poe and actor David Poe, Jr. He had an older brother William Henry Leonard Poe and a younger sister Rosalie Poe(Poemhunter). Shortly after Poe's birth his father abandoned them and their mother died of pulmonary tuberculosis(Poemhunter). Poe was then taken to foster care(Academy of American Poets). Poe ended up in the home of John Allan which is where he got his middle name Allan and became Edgar Allan Poe even though the Allan's never formally adopted him(Poemhunter).
Poe now had transferred families but things didn't get much better. Poe was spoiled and disciplined harshly from his foster dad(Poemhunter). The family was quite wealthy in their regard and could afford to send Poe to the best schools around. Poe attended a school in Irvine Scotland for a short period in 1815 then he studied at a boarding school in Chelsea until the summer of 1817(Poemhunter). By the summer 1825 Allan celebrated his expansive wealth by purchasing a two-story brick home named Moldavia and at this time Poe may have become engaged to Sarah Elmira Royster before he registered at the University of Virginia in February 1826 to study languages(Poemhunter). ...ble. His drinking increased and his decision making skills worsened. Poe would soon come to his own demise in the streets of Baltimore. Poe was found On October 3, 1849 in the streets very disoriented and in dire need of assistance(Poemhunter). He was taken to the Washington College Hospital, where he died on Sunday, October 7, 1849, at 5:00 in the morning(Poemhunter). Poe's reported last words were "Lord help my poor soul."
