Many people know that eating to make junk food can cause unwanted weight gain. What many people don’t know is that skipping a meal can also cause weight gain, even obesity. While people are educated about the effects of junk food unfortunately, they do not know how harmful skipping a meal can be for the human body. I used to be was one of those people, I didn’t know how harmful skipping breakfast was until taking this Health and Wellness class. When asked what more is damaging for one’s health the average person would say junk food due to of prior knowledge of the topic. Surprisingly research shows a very different story. Skipping a meal is worse for a person’s health than eating junk food.

Breakfast is also the meal that I would skip the most. But now I know that in order for me to be healthy I have to eat at least 3 meals a day and add snacks in-between. Without breakfast a person would feel tired and sluggish not long after waking up. In the academic journal Champions of breakfast: skipping the first meal of the day sets in motion hormonal changes linked to appetite shifts, obesity, and diabetes it’s says “anywhere from 10 to 50 percent of Americans skip breakfast”. People that skip breakfast develop irregular appetites and they can ultimately develop obesity or diabetes. After taking a look at my nutrition report for the 7 days, I saw big gaps in-between my meals. Also I saw that some days I wasn’t eating more than once a day and I noticed that I wasn’t getting the nutrients I need to have a healthy and energized body. Journalist, David H. Freedman, and author of How Junk Food Can End Obesity, dedicates an article to address the situation regarding the wholesome food movement. In his writings, he points out that although this new phenomenon brags about healthier foods being made available, there are some faulty aspects within the cause. Many loyal fast-food customers are put off by the anouncement of healthier menu items, while health fanatics are raving about restaurants catering to their needs. Throughout the United States many American’s go through and eat at fast food places such as, McDonalds, Burger King, and Jack ‘n the Box. Mainly unaware of the amount of weight one can gain if consuming it on a daily bases or even two times week, can cause health issues, diabetes and possibly obesity. This was the main premise for writer Dave Zinczenko essay Don’t Blame the Eater, who makes an argument that many people are becoming obese and diabetic because of the fast food they eat. He asks a regarding his concern; Shouldn 't we know better than to eat two meals a day in fast-food restaurants?, As a way to engage the general public, like parents and teenagers, he expresses his argument through his own experience when he was a teenager eating at fast food places and information on the fast food industry in regards to how many calories are in the food.

These stores are run by so-called health food experts. Freedman makes himself distinguishable himself from the position of Michael Pollan and his adherents. His adherents are known as Pollanites. They are the people who believe that processed food is the reason we have health and obesity issues. Fast food companies have caused a massive negative impact to society over the last couple of years despite the companies promise to produce healthy and nutritious meals. Many people have already been affected by the damages caused by eating junk food. During the 1950s, the United States Of America had an obesity rate of under 10 percent and as the fast food chain increased in 1975, the obesity rate rose up to a whopping 32 percent and has only kept growing. As the obesity rate increased so had the other forms of diseases that have and will continue to affect people until it has been known that the junk food is the primary cause and to stop or minimise the junk food intake.150 billion dollars (and still increasing) has been spent on obesity related diseases while a 174 billion dollars has been spent for treatment for diabetes and as more people consume junk food so has been the rate for treatment. In order to reduce medical expenses and self harm from junk food one must first switch to a healthy and proactive lifestyle.If the adults do not stop this bad habit children will follow and be affected in the near future.
