Almost everyone in this world is guilty of impacting the environment one way or another. But what most people do not know is that there is one thing that they are doing that impacts the environment almost as much as anything else. This environmental danger is eating farm raised meats. The majority of the world’s population does this on a daily basis, including myself. For many years there has not been very much information regarding the environmental impacts that eating farm raised meat introduce. But now more than ever, people are starting to take note of what they are doing to the environment by doing such a simple daily habit. The impact of eating farm raised meats was best said by Tim Benton, “The biggest intervention people could make towards reducing their carbon footprints would not be to abandon cars, but to eat significantly less red meat” (The Guardian). This statistic may be staggering to many people, as it should be. A solution to this problem needs to be found as soon as possible if the world wants to reduce the carbon footprint that has been created over the years.
Eating farm raised meats can date back to the earliest of times. This has always been a practice of the human race, and it continues to rise as the population increases. Some people have taken note of this problem, and they have addressed the issue in various ways. But the problem that the world is still being faced with is the large majority of people who do not care about the impacts of this problem. The easiest and most simple way of reducing the impacts being caused by the production of farm raised meats is by lowering the amount of meats eaten, if not stopping it completely. The switch to vegetarian or vegan is one that many people have already undertaken. By simply switching one’s eating habits, it could have a great impact on decreasing the amount of environmental harm being done. The PETA article puts it best by stating, “It takes more than 2,400 gallons of water to produce 1 pound of beef, while producing 1 pound of tofu only requires 244 gallons of water. By going vegan, one person can save approximately 219,000 gallons of water a year” (PETA). If the majority of people on Earth were to switch to vegan, the effect that it would have on our environment would be simply astonishing.
