Eating, Bipolar and Anxiety Disorders

In 2010, eating disorders had a reported 7,000 deaths each year. Not only this, but 3%-5% of children under the age of 18 have an anxiety disorder. Also 15% of all bipolar disorder patients have committed suicide. Eating disorders, anxiety disorders, and bipolar disorders are all prevalent today throughout all ages. Even middle schoolers. Eating Disorders Eating disorders are abnormal eating habits that usually involve eating too little or too much food to the harmful point of both physical and mental health. Most commonly heard is anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. Anorexia nervosa is the extreme restriction of food to a point of extreme weight loss and self-starvation. This eating disorder has two subtypes. The binge/purge type and the restricting type. The restricting type is when someone will go to extreme lengths to keep from gaining weight, examples being starvation or over-exercise. The binge/purge type overeat and then proceed to get rid of that food by using some method of purging (getting rid of food through throwing up what has been eaten). Bulimia nervosa is purging or binge eating (taking in more food than normally eaten). Those with bulimia nervosa are usually at the normal weight for a person, and that is where the difference between bulimia nervosa and the binge/purge type of anorexia nervosa are. Those who suffer from the binge/purge type of anorexia nervosa are below the healthy body weight. In the UK, an estimated of 5-10 million females are affected by eating disorders, and an estimated 1 million males are affected. Eating disorders are usually thought as affecting more of females, but an estimated 10-15% of males have eating disorders. Symptoms of an anxiety disorder taking place includes rapid heartbeat, shaking hands, dry mouth, upset stomach, heavy perspiration, tightness in the chest, and tightness in the neck/shoulders. Anxiety disorders affect 3-5% of children under the age of 18 years old. Outside of a middle school, younger than 18, range, 40 million Americans (over 18 years old), and 17% of the adult population have some sort of anxiety disorder.
