The early salsa music from 1970-1980 will be the focus for this world music genre study. Salsa music includes salsa music and songs, which was developed in New York before its recognition in 1970s. Cuban as the origin of salsa, however, it was believed that the first salsa music was from New York before 1970. ‘Salsa’ has the meaning of ‘sauce’ and it was a product of the interaction between Afro-American and Latin people in New York City who tried to gather together to identify their culture and to maintain the sense of belongings among themselves. Salsa was named after salsa music was developed in New York, and the word ‘salsa’ appeared on songs or records before it became a type of music used for marketing. Salsa songs reflected the society in different time with the lyrics written in the songs, the changes in the expression or emotion through lyrics was involved with the shift of culture within societies.

In the following world music genre study, findings of salsa music will be divided into three parts including origins, context, creators and performers will be discussed. The timeframe 1970- 1980 will be the focus of the study as early salsa. The origins will be considering how salsa is developed thorough looking at how and where ‘salsa’ music started blooming and people that involved in the development of salsa. How and why ‘salsa’ was named after this type of music. Also, the context of the music will be discussed. The creators and performers of early salsa, how and where were these people connected to each other, and who are the prominent artists within the timeframe will be studied. Creators and performers of salsa are musicians who play different instruments as well as other music genre such as jazz or Cuban son. Earlier salsa audiences were mainly Puerto Ricans, and spread out not only to Latin American but other places until it gained its popularity. Salsa is both instrumental and vocal dance music, salsa bands performed salsa mainly in either conjuntos or charangas style. The music text is mostly about romance, feelings regard to everyday life, political and social issues that reflects the Latin American experiences and their culture. Salsa is performed in English, Spanish, or Spanglish with the influence of its background, Latin American who speaks Spanish or descendant of Latino who was born and raised in New York who express themselves in English better then in Spanish.
