“More than 1.3 million students drop out of high school every year in the US”.(Gavett) When a student decides to quit school, they are usually only thinking about “the right now” and not how it will affect them in the future. Dropping out of school involves many life-altering circumstances, such as immediately having to make adult decisions like getting a full time job at such a young age due to having to help provide for their family. Also becoming a parent while still in high school can ruin a student’s high school career if it is not handled correctly. Parental involvement is pertinent to the success or failing of a student. The amount of students dropping out of high school is steadily increasing, but the reasons are always due to inability to perform.

Dropping out of high school is not an overnight process, it takes many steps and a lot of time. There are numerous reasons for why students decide to withdraw from school such as: lack of parental support, family or economical needs, being pushed out which is basically when a student is pressured into dropping out, student fade out which is when a student who is doing well in school stops becomes uninterested or stops feeling that school is important and eventually stops caring and drops out. All of these causes have one major thing in common; stress, a student’s stress level is either what makes or breaks their high school career. When students feel stressed, they are going to try and find a way to relieve it, and although there are different alternatives, many students turn to drugs such as marijuana. When this happens, they feel more confident about their abilities reducing the possibility of them losing hope in their academic potential. Providing students with a sense of confidence in themselves is the key to them graduating because once they give up and decide that they can’t do it, it’s all downhill from there. Instilling confidence in a student is they key to their academic success.
In conclusion, the solution to lowering the high school dropout rate by taking into consideration the student’s mindset and how outside forces affect their performance in school. Making it imperative to ensure that all of the issues such as students being pushed out, student fade out, over stressing, pregnancy, and lack of parental support are addressed correctly.
