The Oxford English Dictionary defines the “American Dream” as “the ideal that every citizen of the United States should have an equal opportunity to achieve success and prosperity through hard work, determination, and initiative.” Many pursue this dream, whether they are American citizens or undocumented immigrants. In fact, it is this dream that motivated my parents to leave their country, Honduras, and migrate to the U.S. It is this dream that constantly pushed me to do the best I could in order to make my parents’ sacrifice worthwhile. However, the “American Dream,” the desire of a better life, the mere human instinct to be happy, is not equal. This “dream” is sometimes a mere fantasy filled with delusional hope.
