If you haven’t played Dragon Age: Origins yet, stop reading this article, get up, go to the store right now, buy it, play it, and come back. OK, now that everyone has played it, let’s discuss Bioware’s first official expansion for it. Dragon Age: Awakenings is a rather impressive expansion, except for the slight fact that it costs almost as much as Origins did when it first came out.

First off, Awakenings takes place after the events in Origins play out. Utilizing roughly the same tools Mass Effect 2 had, Awakenings can follow the decisions your character made in Origins should you decide to import your old character. It is very cool, albeit misleading. You see, the events it picks up on really don’t have much of an impact on your Awakenings story. It will definitely change some things, but don’t expect anything drastic. Importing is not necessary, though, as you can simply create a new, Orlesian Warden character from scratch. Either way, your ultimate goal is to find out more about the Darkspawn who, for some unknown reason, haven’t fled underground and are apparently coherent. The story itself is pretty well written, but nothing of the depth the main game has. Caring about the story became a necessity to see what the next cameo or reference or new piece of armor was. That didn’t take long with Awakenings taking up two afternoons of casual gaming. Throughout the game, this nagging exists that perhaps the story was secondary to the addition of cool new things. More effort seemed to go in to those than to make the story more fleshed out.

Bioware has made some cool changes, indeed. The biggest change is an increase in your level cap. Now all characters top out at Level 30. In addition to a higher cap comes additional spells...

...s off your party, they aren’t interested. Even romances started in Origins don’t carry over so sorry to any ladies who ogled over Alistair. He just wants to be friends. This mistake is probably the biggest one Bioware has made in regards to this franchise. They spent so long getting players to care for their characters, get the player to expect that, then make it all but gone. *Cue Cinderella’s “Don’t Know What You Got”*

In the end, Awakenings was a worthwhile, but short-lived experience. The additional items and skills and the chance to see more of the Dragon Age world is too sweet for any serious Dragon Age fan to go without. Ironically, the serious fans will be the ones who notice what’s missing more and even be upset by what is essentially “Dragon-Age Lite”. Great piece to own if you can part with the cash, otherwise save your money until the price comes down.
