Modern society faces many challenges. As the United States prepares for the next presidential election in 2016, many politicians are campaigning across the country, attempting to solve those challenges. They are listening to the voices of the people they seek to lead. Those voices include many topics of discussion: terrorism, especially after the recent tragedy in Paris, immigration, education, and, as Dr. Henry Pollack might regard as the most important, Earth’s ever-changing climate. Earth is a planet that has extremely rare characteristics, and as Dr. Pollack states, it “occupies a special location in the neighborhood” (55). These criteria work in balance, and each, if altered, would create profound effects on society today. Dr. Henry Pollack, an experienced and passionate geophysicist, persuasively displays these effects in a sophisticated way in A World Without Ice. As an individual who is fascinated by science and very knowledgeable of some of its disciplines, I found Dr. Pollack’s work very important, and one that people across the world should read. Despite being very cognizant about the subject, Dr. Pollack presented some relationships between aspects of Earth’s climate that I have not pondered before. In order for one to comprehend how our planet is unique and dynamic, it is imperative to understand how the climate functions from pole to pole, which is what Dr. Pollack precisely outlined throughout the beginning of the book.
