HOST: Today, more and more students choose to study aboard in America, such as Chinese students. Some people may think that international students can easily get together with local students. However, things are really different from that. The truth is that most Chinese international students always cannot get along well with American students. Only few Chinese international students have local American friends and even so, they just have fewer American friends. Why they cannot make American friends? Besides, as some parents are highly control their children, does this pheonomene make pressure on students from their parents and how can we solve that? Jia Ren, a Chinese international students who study at ASU, talks about her situations about having American friends or not. Jia: I don’t have American friends. I think the most difficult part avoiding me to be a great friend with them is language. Host: Jia Ren talks about her situation that she doesn’t have American friends and also she points out a problem to hinder her become friends with American is the language. Jia Ren also explains it specifically. Jia: I always afraid to talk to them. It’s because I don’t know if I talk about this or talking in this form, they will be angry with me or not. I afraid that what I said may cause another meaning to American students, which may cause some problems. Host: People have to admit which Jia Ren said that the different-meaning parts of language will always cause problems when we are communicating. Host: So, the main reason Mr. Deng not to blame her daughter on making no American friends is communication. We all know that communication can solve many problems, thus, Chinese students can try to talk to their parents to prevent parents-control on friends making. Moreover, according to our interviews, the most important two problems preventing international students to make local friends are language and inner factors. Local American students think that language is a problem but the problem is that international students always stay only with same nation students and speak their own language. By the end, it is easy to see that both sides students can do a little thing to change this problem. But we still hope the university can provide a hand to help them.
The problem started with her mother because she spoke broken English. She had a hard time during her life when she moved to the US because she couldn’t speak English well. The first reason was mixed the English with Chinese, and they used code. The family didn’t practice the language. I have been in this country for almost three months now. One of the biggest challenges is getting along peacefully with the native population. To Americans one of the most important things is to make sure that no one gets insulted or hurt and that everyone is heard. Some would go to the extent of not revealing their true opinion, in order to avoid confrontation. In some group discussion decisions, if reached at all, are made after making long, tedious conversation about the topic at hand. While there are some merits to this kind of behavior, other aspects of interpersonal aspects are lost, such as frankness and being open to one another. Sitting among other international students enhances these observations by listening to the so-called “outsiders” talk amongst themselves. On one occasion a fellow student tried to explain something to his friend from another foreign country that he had different opinions from him on a certain subject, talking and describing the matter and “beating around the bush” as they say, when all of a sudden the listener said,” Just say what you think – don’t be an American.” I was amazed that someone noticed or thought the same way I did.
During my lifetime, I have had experiences with three friends from foreign countries. All of them are proficient when speaking English. Two of them had no problems with assimilating, however one of them, my old friend Anna, did not even try to assimilate to the American culture. I met Anna when I started seventh grade. She had moved to the United States with her parents from Russia a year earlier. In the mothers’ eyes, the least they can do is lend some of their Chinese insight to aid their American daughters. One could argue that the mothers’ trials don’t equate to modern times and the Western world. However, making that assumption would discredit the connection that is evident between the generations. Rather, the mothers’ experiences translate quite well, lending them greater insight into their daughters than their daughters could hope to know.

There are many All-Americans but she likes to be someone who is multicultural, and she had numerous possibilities to hold her Chinese culture. Coming to the United States for college can introduce cultural differences that even the most prepared students might not anticipate. From campus life to classroom etiquette, US school can be quite a different experience from learning in other countries around the world. It is rather natural for students from other countries to join communities that somehow remind them of home and give them the opportunity to remain connected with their roots and at the same time bring the world a little closer to fellow classmates. In recent years, a growing number of parents are sending their children to study abroad. In 2011, the university of Cambridge had nearly 1,000 Chinese students who studied in undergraduate or postgraduate degrees in engineering, sciences, mathematics, international relation, economics，finance and administration (BBC news, 2011). Parents believe that their children may will become more self-conscious, because their children have to look after themselves and manage their finance (Topuniversities, 2014). However, there are some difficulties, such as foreign language problems, teaching methodologies, exam and social network need to be faced when they study abroad for the first time. The difference between American and Japanese ways of speaking can cause us some bad experiences at first; however, once we get accustomed to the direct speech of Americans, it is more convenient than the Japanese way. First, we can say what we want. Second, we do not have to hesitate to tell the truth in order to be polite. Finally, it frees us from unnecessary misunderstandings. International students face many different challenges when studying abroad. This is due to many factors. First they are living in a country very far away from their own. The country they are studying in also has a very different way of life than theirs. Also the laws in foreign country are much different than the laws in their own country. Due to that they face a lot of problems trying to adapt to this new culture.
